What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The LORD’s voice has to be explained to Samuel by Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim that he could not see.

The call in the nightvv. 1–9

Samuel lies down near the ark while Eli lies in his room, and the LORD calls him. Samuel answers readily enough, but assumes the caller is Eli; three trips later, Eli understands what is happening. It is a splendidly quiet comedy of mistaken voices, except that the word of the LORD is rare and the matter is not light.

The message Samuel fears to tellvv. 10–18

Samuel lies down in his place, and the LORD stands there and speaks of judgment against Eli’s house: his sons blasphemed God, and Eli did not restrain them. By morning Samuel is opening the doors of the house of the LORD, which is a remarkably ordinary task after such a revelation, and he is afraid to tell Eli. Eli must press him for the message; Samuel then tells him everything, and Eli leaves the matter with the LORD.

Samuel is known in Israelvv. 19–21

Samuel grows, the LORD remains with him, and none of his words falls to the ground. All Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, knows that he is confirmed as a prophet of the LORD. The LORD continues to appear at Shiloh, revealing Himself to Samuel by His word.

  1. 1 Sam 3:1And the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare, and visions were scarce.

  2. 1 Sam 3:2And at that time Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim that he could not see, was lying in his room.

  3. 1 Sam 3:3Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was located.

  4. 1 Sam 3:4Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”

  5. 1 Sam 3:5He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

  6. 1 Sam 3:6Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”

  7. 1 Sam 3:7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

  8. 1 Sam 3:8Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy.

  9. 1 Sam 3:9“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

  10. 1 Sam 3:10Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”

  11. 1 Sam 3:11Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will tingle.

  12. 1 Sam 3:12On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I have spoken about his house, from beginning to end.

  13. 1 Sam 3:13I told him that I would judge his house forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.

  14. 1 Sam 3:14Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, ‘The iniquity of Eli’s house shall never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”

  15. 1 Sam 3:15Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,

  16. 1 Sam 3:16but Eli called to him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel.

  17. 1 Sam 3:17“What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.”

  18. 1 Sam 3:18So Samuel told him everything and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”

  19. 1 Sam 3:19And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and He let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.

  20. 1 Sam 3:20So all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.

  21. 1 Sam 3:21And the LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
