Description

Dan in the text

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Dan was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Jacob's fifth son, Dan (Genesis 30:6). The tribe was allotted territory in the northern part of Canaan (Joshua 19:40-48). The city of Dan, originally known as Laish or Leshem, was conquered by the Danites (Joshua 19:47; Judges 18:29). It became the northernmost city of Israel, often used in the phrase "from Dan to Beersheba" to describe the entire land (Judges 20:1; 1Sa.3.20). Jeroboam set up one of his golden calves in Dan (1Ki.12.29-30), leading to idolatry. The city was also known for its skilled craftsmen (2Ch.2.14). Dan was one of the first places to fall to foreign invaders due to its northern location (Jeremiah 4:15; 8:16).

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

Where Dan is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

64 verses across 16 of 66 books; 50 write the name nowhere. Named in Genesis (1), Exodus (4), Leviticus (1), Numbers (10), Deuteronomy (3), Joshua (5), Judges (17), 1 Samuel (1), 2 Samuel (5), 1 Kings (4), 2 Kings (1), 1 Chronicles (3), 2 Chronicles (3), Jeremiah (2), Ezekiel (3) and Amos (1).

Dan is named in 64 verses, and the name is written 76 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 50 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
