The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
Pharaoh is asked for a feast and answers by removing the straw, preserving the brick quota, and calling the brickmakers lazy. It is a remarkably brisk exchange between worship and paperwork.
A feast is refusedvv. 1–5
Moses and Aaron bring Pharaoh the LORD’s demand: let Israel go into the wilderness for a feast. Pharaoh answers that he does not know the LORD and will not let Israel go. The request for sacrifice is treated as an interruption to labour, and the king sends them back to it.
The quota remainsvv. 6–19
That same day, Pharaoh removes the supplied straw but not the required number of bricks. The people scatter through Egypt gathering stubble, while the taskmasters press them to keep pace. The Israelite foremen are beaten, appeal to Pharaoh, and receive the same answer in sharper form: no straw, full quota, and the accusation of slackness. It is a particularly ingenious way to make a shortage sound like a moral failing.
Moses asks whyvv. 20–23
The foremen leave Pharaoh and confront Moses and Aaron, saying that their intervention has made them a stench before Pharaoh and put a sword into the hands of his officials. Moses then returns to the LORD with the plainest possible question: why send him, if Pharaoh has brought trouble and the people have not been delivered? The chapter records the question and stops there.

Exod 5:1After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”
Exod 5:2But Pharaoh replied, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.”
Exod 5:3“The God of the Hebrews has met with us,” they answered. “Please let us go on a three-day journey into the wilderness to sacrifice to the LORD our God, or He may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
Exod 5:4But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the people away from their work? Get back to your labor!”
Exod 5:5Pharaoh also said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you would be stopping them from their labor.”
Exod 5:6That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen:
Exod 5:7“You shall no longer supply the people with straw for making bricks. They must go and gather their own straw.
Exod 5:8But require of them the same quota of bricks as before; do not reduce it. For they are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’
Exod 5:9Make the work harder on the men so they will be occupied and pay no attention to these lies.”
Exod 5:10So the taskmasters and foremen of the people went out and said to them, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I am no longer giving you straw.
Exod 5:11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it; but your workload will in no way be reduced.’”
Exod 5:12So the people scattered all over the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
Exod 5:13The taskmasters kept pressing them, saying, “Fulfill your quota each day, just as you did when straw was provided.”
Exod 5:14Then the Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over the people, were beaten and asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as you did before?”
Exod 5:15So the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your servants this way?
Exod 5:16No straw has been given to your servants, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Look, your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
Exod 5:17“You are slackers!” Pharaoh replied. “Slackers! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’
Exod 5:18Now get to work. You will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the full quota of bricks.”
Exod 5:19The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You must not reduce your daily quota of bricks.”
Exod 5:20When they left Pharaoh, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who stood waiting to meet them.
Exod 5:21“May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the foremen said, “for you have made us a stench before Pharaoh and his officials; you have placed in their hand a sword to kill us!”
Exod 5:22So Moses returned to the LORD and asked, “Lord, why have You brought trouble upon this people? Is this why You sent me?
Exod 5:23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and You have not delivered Your people in any way.”

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
