The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A man is handed over to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, rather oddly in the hope that his spirit may be saved.

Pride, grief, and the unwelcome remedyvv. 1–8

The offense is described as intolerable even among pagans: a man has his father’s wife. Yet the congregation is proud, when grief and removal were called for. Though absent in body, the writer declares himself present in spirit and gives the assembled congregation a severe sentence: hand the man over to Satan, with destruction of the flesh aimed—strangely and deliberately—at the saving of his spirit on the Day of the Lord. Their boasting is then compared with leaven, which has the tiresome habit of spreading through the whole batch. The old leaven must go; Christ is named as the sacrificed Passover lamb, and the feast is to be kept with sincerity and truth rather than malice and wickedness.

The boundary that would empty the worldvv. 9–13

The writer clarifies an earlier instruction not to associate with sexually immoral people. It was not meant to include everyone in the world who is sexually immoral, greedy, a swindler, or an idolater; that rule would require leaving the world altogether, which is a wonderfully impractical boundary. The restriction concerns anyone who claims to be a brother while living as a sexually immoral person, a greedy person, an idolater, a verbal abuser, a drunkard, or a swindler. Judgment of those outside is left to God; the congregation’s concern is within its own fellowship, ending with the blunt command to expel the wicked man.

  1. 1 Cor 5:1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is intolerable even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife.

  2. 1 Cor 5:2And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been stricken with grief and have removed from your fellowship the man who did this?

  3. 1 Cor 5:3Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.

  4. 1 Cor 5:4When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of the Lord Jesus,

  5. 1 Cor 5:5hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.

  6. 1 Cor 5:6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven works through the whole batch of dough?

  7. 1 Cor 5:7Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

  8. 1 Cor 5:8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old bread, leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and of truth.

  9. 1 Cor 5:9I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.

  10. 1 Cor 5:10I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

  11. 1 Cor 5:11But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

  12. 1 Cor 5:12What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?

  13. 1 Cor 5:13God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”
