The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The chapter’s secure resting-place is followed, without so much as a hinge, by hail, a sunken city, and then an ox and a donkey wandering freely beside the water.
A kingdom with its eyes openvv. 1–8
A king and his princes appear first, not in splendour but as weatherproofing: shelter, refuge, streams, and rock. Then sight begins to work, hearing begins to listen, the rash mind understands, and the stammering tongue comes out plainly. The social labels are sorted as well: fools and scoundrels lose their borrowed dignity, while the noble man is the one making honourable plans and standing up for worthy causes.
The ladies of leisure meet the harvestvv. 9–14
The complacent women and overconfident daughters are summoned to listen, though listening is not the end of their troubles. In a little more than a year the grapes and fruit fail; leisure gives way to trembling, sackcloth, and beating breasts. The pleasant fields, fruitful vines, merry houses, palace, city, hill, and watchtower are left to thorns, caves, wild donkeys, and flocks—a remarkably thorough rearrangement of the neighbourhood.
The orchard, the hail, and the wandering pairvv. 15–20
The change waits for the Spirit to be poured out from on high. Desert becomes orchard, orchard becomes forest, justice inhabits the wilderness, and righteousness settles in the fertile field; peace and quiet confidence follow, with the people resting in safety. Then hail levels the forest and the city sinks, and the chapter closes not with an explanation but with sowing beside abundant waters and an ox and donkey given room to range.

Isa 32:1Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule with justice.
Isa 32:2Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a great rock in an arid land.
Isa 32:3Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen.
Isa 32:4The mind of the rash will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will speak clearly and fluently.
Isa 32:5No longer will a fool be called noble, nor a scoundrel be respected.
Isa 32:6For a fool speaks foolishness; his mind plots iniquity. He practices ungodliness and speaks falsely about the LORD; he leaves the hungry empty and deprives the thirsty of drink.
Isa 32:7The weapons of the scoundrel are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.
Isa 32:8But a noble man makes honorable plans; he stands up for worthy causes.
Isa 32:9Stand up, you complacent women; listen to me. Give ear to my word, you overconfident daughters.
Isa 32:10In a little more than a year you will tremble, O secure ones. For the grape harvest will fail and the fruit harvest will not arrive.
Isa 32:11Shudder, you ladies of leisure; tremble, you daughters of complacency. Strip yourselves bare and put sackcloth around your waists.
Isa 32:12Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vines,
Isa 32:13and for the land of my people, overgrown with thorns and briers—even for every house of merriment in this city of revelry.
Isa 32:14For the palace will be forsaken, the busy city abandoned. The hill and the watchtower will become caves forever—the delight of wild donkeys and a pasture for flocks—
Isa 32:15until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high. Then the desert will be an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest.
Isa 32:16Then justice will inhabit the wilderness, and righteousness will dwell in the fertile field.
Isa 32:17The work of righteousness will be peace; the service of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.
Isa 32:18Then my people will dwell in a peaceful place, in safe and secure places of rest.
Isa 32:19But hail will level the forest, and the city will sink to the depths.
Isa 32:20Blessed are those who sow beside abundant waters, who let the ox and donkey range freely.
