The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The restoration comes with an extraordinary change of occupations: strangers feed the flocks, foreigners work the fields and vineyards, while the restored people become priests, ministers, and heirs to the wealth of nations.

Good news for the brokenheartedvv. 1–3

The speaker is anointed to announce good news to the poor, bind up broken hearts, proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners, and name both the LORD’s favor and God’s vengeance. The mourners in Zion receive an astonishing wardrobe: beauty for ashes, joy in place of mourning, and praise in place of despair. They are called oaks of righteousness, planted by the LORD for his glory.

A very grand change of employmentvv. 4–11

The ruined cities are rebuilt, but the social arrangements are even more remarkable: strangers feed the flocks and foreigners become plowmen and vinedressers, while the restored people are called priests and ministers of God. Shame gives way to a double portion and everlasting joy because the LORD loves justice, hates robbery and iniquity, and promises an everlasting covenant. The final speaker bursts into rejoicing, dressed in salvation and righteousness; the comparison somehow places a priestly headdress on a bridegroom, while the LORD makes righteousness and praise grow before all nations.

  1. Isa 61:1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners,

  2. Isa 61:2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn,

  3. Isa 61:3to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

  4. Isa 61:4They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.

  5. Isa 61:5Strangers will stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.

  6. Isa 61:6But you will be called the priests of the LORD; they will speak of you as ministers of our God; you will feed on the wealth of nations, and you will boast in their riches.

  7. Isa 61:7Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion, and instead of humiliation, they will rejoice in their share; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs.

  8. Isa 61:8For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity; in My faithfulness I will give them their recompense and make an everlasting covenant with them.

  9. Isa 61:9Their descendants will be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the LORD has blessed.

  10. Isa 61:10I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom wears a priestly headdress, as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

  11. Isa 61:11For as the earth brings forth its growth, and as a garden enables seed to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
