The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The seven sons are counted, but the three daughters are named: Jemimah, Keziah, and Keren-happuch. They are also granted an inheritance among their brothers, while the sons remain a number in the household ledger.

Job answers, and the friends are sent back to himvv. 1–9

Job’s final reply is brief, chastened, and rather magnificent: he concedes that he had spoken beyond his understanding, then repents in dust and ashes. The LORD’s attention turns to Eliphaz and his two friends, whose speeches have not been accurate. Their remedy is wonderfully uncomfortable: they must bring sacrifices to Job, and Job must pray for them. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar do exactly as ordered, and the prayer is accepted.

A restored household, with the daughters in the foregroundvv. 10–17

After Job prays for the very friends who had been rebuked, his prosperity is restored and doubled. His brothers, sisters, and former acquaintances come to eat in his house, bringing consolation, a piece of silver, and a gold ring apiece. Then comes the curious family portrait: seven sons, three daughters, and names only for the daughters—Jemimah, Keziah, and Keren-happuch—who are praised as the most beautiful women in the land and receive an inheritance among their brothers. Job lives long enough to see four generations, and dies old and full of years.

  1. Job 42:1Then Job replied to the LORD:

  2. Job 42:2“I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours can be thwarted.

  3. Job 42:3You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

  4. Job 42:4You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak. I will question you, and you shall inform Me.’

  5. Job 42:5My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.

  6. Job 42:6Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes.”

  7. Job 42:7After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.

  8. Job 42:8So now, take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken accurately about Me, as My servant Job has.”

  9. Job 42:9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s prayer.

  10. Job 42:10After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions.

  11. Job 42:11All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and dined with him in his house. They consoled him and comforted him over all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.

  12. Job 42:12So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.

  13. Job 42:13And he also had seven sons and three daughters.

  14. Job 42:14He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch.

  15. Job 42:15No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers.

  16. Job 42:16After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

  17. Job 42:17And so Job died, old and full of years.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
