The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The east wind does not merely carry the wicked man away; it chases him, claps its hands, and hisses him out of his place.

Job will not surrender his integrityvv. 1–10

Job continues his discourse with an oath as sturdy as the breath in his nostrils. Though he says God has deprived him of justice and embittered his soul, he will not let his lips speak wickedness or his tongue utter deceit. He will maintain his integrity until death, and leaves his friends with a sharp question: what hope has the godless when distress comes, if he will not call upon God?

The wicked man's inheritancevv. 11–23

Job now says he will instruct them in the Almighty's power, though he cannot resist observing that they have seen it already and are keeping up empty talk. The wicked man's portion is then laid out in a grim catalogue: sons for the sword, survivors for the plague, wealth for the righteous, and a house no sturdier than a moth's cocoon. He may lie down wealthy, but he opens his eyes to an emptied world. At the end, the east wind becomes almost theatrically rude, hurling itself at him, carrying him away, clapping its hands, and hissing him out of his place.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
