Job 2

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Job’s friends come to comfort him, then sit beside him for seven days and seven nights without saying a word. Meanwhile, the LORD openly names the ruin as causeless, which is a remarkably awkward thing to say in the middle of a heavenly conversation.

The test reaches the skinvv. 1–6

The sons of God appear before the LORD, with Satan among them, and Satan reports that he has been roaming through the earth. The LORD praises Job’s integrity while acknowledging that Satan incited Him to ruin Job without cause. Satan proposes the old grim exchange—skin for skin—and the LORD places Job in his hands, with one limit: his life must be spared.

Ashes, advice, and an answervv. 7–10

Satan leaves the LORD’s presence and covers Job with terrible boils from foot to crown. Job scrapes himself with broken pottery among the ashes. His wife offers a two-step philosophy of catastrophe—curse God, then die—but Job answers that good and adversity are both received from God, and the text says he did not sin in what he said.

The comforters keep silencevv. 11–13

Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite hear of Job’s adversity and come together to sympathize with him and comfort him. From far off they scarcely recognise him; they weep, tear their robes, and throw dust over their heads. Then they sit with Job on the ground for seven days and seven nights, saying nothing because his suffering is so intense—a silence with rather more stamina than most speeches.

  1. Job 2:1On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.

  2. Job 2:2“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”

  3. Job 2:3Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”

  4. Job 2:4“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.

  5. Job 2:5But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”

  6. Job 2:6“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.”

  7. Job 2:7So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

  8. Job 2:8And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.

  9. Job 2:9Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!”

  10. Job 2:10“You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

  11. Job 2:11Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him.

  12. Job 2:12When they lifted up their eyes from afar, they could barely recognize Job. They began to weep aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust in the air over his head.

  13. Job 2:13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
