The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The ostrich leaves her eggs where feet may crush them, treats her young as strangers, and then spreads her wings to laugh at the horse and its rider.
Creatures beyond the furrowvv. 1–12
Mountain goats give birth without human supervision, and their young grow up in the open field before leaving for good. The wild donkey has the wilderness and salt flats for home, scorns the city’s tumult, and searches the mountains for green things. The wild ox, meanwhile, is a splendidly inconvenient farmhand: strength is no promise of obedience, and grain-gathering is not his calling.
The ostrich and the war horsevv. 13–25
The ostrich is given a curious mixture of gaiety and negligence. Her eggs lie in the sand, her young receive little tenderness, and wisdom has not been her portion; yet she spreads her wings and laughs at the horse and rider. The horse has rather more enthusiasm than caution. He paws the valley, charges into battle, ignores the sword, and becomes positively impatient when the ram’s horn announces that war is nearby.
High crags and a darker mealvv. 26–30
The hawk takes flight and spreads its wings southward. The eagle makes its nest on a rocky crag, spies food from afar, and ends the chapter with an image of brisk, unornamented savagery: its young feast on blood, and the eagle is wherever the slain are.

Job 39:1“Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you watched the doe bear her fawn?
Job 39:2Can you count the months they are pregnant? Do you know the time they give birth?
Job 39:3They crouch down and bring forth their young; they deliver their newborn.
Job 39:4Their young ones thrive and grow up in the open field; they leave and do not return.
Job 39:5Who set the wild donkey free? Who released the swift donkey from the harness?
Job 39:6I made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
Job 39:7He scorns the tumult of the city and never hears the shouts of a driver.
Job 39:8He roams the mountains for pasture, searching for any green thing.
Job 39:9Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your manger at night?
Job 39:10Can you hold him to the furrow with a harness? Will he plow the valleys behind you?
Job 39:11Can you rely on his great strength? Will you leave your hard work to him?
Job 39:12Can you trust him to bring in your grain and gather it to your threshing floor?
Job 39:13The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but cannot match the pinions and feathers of the stork.
Job 39:14For she leaves her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand.
Job 39:15She forgets that a foot may crush them, or a wild animal may trample them.
Job 39:16She treats her young harshly, as if not her own, with no concern that her labor was in vain.
Job 39:17For God has deprived her of wisdom; He has not endowed her with understanding.
Job 39:18Yet when she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider.
Job 39:19Do you give strength to the horse or adorn his neck with a mane?
Job 39:20Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting?
Job 39:21He paws in the valley and rejoices in his strength; he charges into battle.
Job 39:22He laughs at fear, frightened of nothing; he does not turn back from the sword.
Job 39:23A quiver rattles at his side, along with a flashing spear and lance.
Job 39:24Trembling with excitement, he devours the distance; he cannot stand still when the ram’s horn sounds.
Job 39:25At the blast of the horn, he snorts with fervor. He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shouts of captains and the cry of war.
Job 39:26Does the hawk take flight by your understanding and spread his wings toward the south?
Job 39:27Does the eagle soar at your command and make his nest on high?
Job 39:28He dwells on a cliff and lodges there; his stronghold is on a rocky crag.
Job 39:29From there he spies out food; his eyes see it from afar.
Job 39:30His young ones feast on blood; and where the slain are, there he is.”

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
