Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Michael's dispute with the devil is over Moses's body, and Jude preserves only one sentence from the quarrel: “The Lord rebuke you!”

The quarrel and the warningsvv. 1–16

Jude writes as a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, turning from the salvation he meant to describe toward a more urgent summons: the faith is to be contended for. Certain men have slipped in unnoticed, turning grace into a license for immorality and denying Jesus Christ. Jude then brings out a formidable procession of examples: Jesus delivered His people from Egypt and destroyed those who did not believe; angels abandoned their proper dwelling and were kept in chains; Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding cities became examples in eternal fire. Then comes the wonderfully unexplained episode: Michael disputes with the devil over Moses's body, says only “The Lord rebuke you!”, and leaves the rest of the quarrel in the dark. The intruders are then given a gallery of images—irrational animals, hidden reefs, waterless clouds, wandering stars, and fruitless trees in autumn, “twice dead after being uprooted.”

Mercy, fear, and the awaited mercyvv. 17–25

Jude now turns from the intruders to the beloved: remember what the apostles foretold, build yourselves up in the faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, and remain in the love of God while awaiting the mercy of Jesus Christ. The treatment of others comes in three degrees. Some doubters are to receive mercy; others are to be snatched from the fire; and still others are to be shown mercy tempered with fear, with hatred extending even to “the clothing stained by the flesh.” The letter ends by looking to the one able to keep them from stumbling and to present them unblemished, before giving glory, majesty, dominion, and authority to God through Jesus Christ—before all time, now, and for all eternity.

  1. Jude 1:1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:

  2. Jude 1:2Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

  3. Jude 1:3Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.

  4. Jude 1:4For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

  5. Jude 1:5Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.

  6. Jude 1:6And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day.

  7. Jude 1:7In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.

  8. Jude 1:8Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.

  9. Jude 1:9But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

  10. Jude 1:10These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.

  11. Jude 1:11Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.

  12. Jude 1:12These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.

  13. Jude 1:13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

  14. Jude 1:14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones

  15. Jude 1:15to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.”

  16. Jude 1:16These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage.

  17. Jude 1:17But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ

  18. Jude 1:18when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”

  19. Jude 1:19These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit.

  20. Jude 1:20But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,

  21. Jude 1:21keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.

  22. Jude 1:22And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;

  23. Jude 1:23save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.

  24. Jude 1:24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy—

  25. Jude 1:25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
