The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Peace is named while Assyria is invading and trampling the citadels—not after the noise has packed up.

A ruler from the little placevv. 1–6

The chapter opens with a siege and a blow to Israel’s judge, then turns sharply to Bethlehem Ephrathah, small among Judah’s clans, from which a ruler will come. His origins reach back to eternity; he will shepherd, and his greatness will reach the ends of the earth. Then, with Assyria still invading and trampling citadels, he is called peace. The defenders are to be seven shepherds—indeed eight leaders of men, as though seven had just been found insufficient or eight had suddenly become irresistible.

Dew, then a lionvv. 7–9

The remnant of Jacob appears among many peoples in two very different moods. First it is dew and showers, arriving without waiting for mankind; then it is a lion among beasts and a young lion among sheep, trampling and tearing without a rescuer in sight. The hand over foes rises, and the enemies are cut off.

Security by demolitionvv. 10–15

After the promise that the people will dwell securely comes a remarkable clearing-out. Horses, chariots, cities, strongholds, sorceries, fortune-tellers, carved images, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles are all removed or demolished. The chapter ends not with the tidy silence of a finished siege, but with vengeance against nations that have not obeyed the LORD.

  1. Mic 5:1Now, O daughter of troops, mobilize your troops; for a siege is laid against us! With a rod they will strike the cheek of the judge of Israel.

  2. Mic 5:2But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel—One whose origins are of old, from the days of eternity.

  3. Mic 5:3Therefore Israel will be abandoned until she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of His brothers will return to the children of Israel.

  4. Mic 5:4He will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD His God. And they will dwell securely, for then His greatness will extend to the ends of the earth.

  5. Mic 5:5And He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land and tramples our citadels. We will raise against it seven shepherds, even eight leaders of men.

  6. Mic 5:6And they will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod with the blade drawn. So He will deliver us when Assyria invades our land and marches into our borders.

  7. Mic 5:7Then the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or linger for mankind.

  8. Mic 5:8Then the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, with no one to rescue them.

  9. Mic 5:9Your hand will be lifted over your foes, and all your enemies will be cut off.

  10. Mic 5:10“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses from among you and wreck your chariots.

  11. Mic 5:11I will remove the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds.

  12. Mic 5:12I will cut the sorceries from your hand, and you will have no fortune-tellers.

  13. Mic 5:13I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.

  14. Mic 5:14I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst and demolish your cities.

  15. Mic 5:15I will take vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed Me.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
