Proverbs 5

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A warning about adultery turns, quite without apology, into cisterns, springs, wells, and the wife’s breasts—a household plumbing metaphor with an unusually memorable final flourish.

Honey at the door, bitterness belowvv. 1–14

The speaker begins with wisdom, discretion, and preserved knowledge, then introduces the forbidden woman: honey on her lips, oil in her speech, wormwood in the end. Her feet descend towards death, while the heedless man’s strength, years, wealth, and labour pass to others. At the end comes the groan of a man who hated discipline, ignored teachers and mentors, and finds himself on the brink of ruin in the midst of the assembly.

The domestic water supplyvv. 15–20

The warning changes its scenery altogether. Adultery is now pictured as water escaping into streets and public squares, while faithful desire is gathered at one’s own cistern and well. The fountain is blessed, the wife of youth becomes a loving doe and graceful fawn, and her breasts are praised with a frankness that leaves the chapter’s plumbing metaphor nowhere left to hide.

The cords close around himvv. 21–23

The final turn leaves the household and looks upward: a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, who examines every path. The wicked man is not merely accused from outside; his own iniquities entrap him and his own folly leads him astray, until he dies for lack of discipline.
