Psalms 87

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Zion has an astonishingly large birth register: Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush are named among those who know the LORD, and the verdict falls, rather briskly, on “This one was born in Zion.”

A city loved above the dwellingsvv. 1–3

The song opens with a city founded on holy mountains, and the LORD’s affection is directed particularly towards its gates. Zion is called the city of God, with glorious things said of it; the psalm pauses there, as though even it has noticed the grandeur.

The surprising birthplacevv. 4–7

Then the register becomes wonderfully expansive. Rahab and Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush are named among those who know the LORD, and each is swept into the phrase about being born in Zion. The Most High establishes the city, the LORD writes the peoples into His register, and the singers and pipers finish with springs of joy in God—a civic ceremony that has acquired music and rather more nations than one might expect.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
