The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Hananiah stages a victory by snapping Jeremiah’s wooden yoke in two; the chapter promptly reveals that the splintered prop has only made room for iron.

A broken yoke, and a cheerful “Amen!”vv. 1–11

In the house of the LORD, before priests and people, Hananiah son of Azzur announces that Babylon’s yoke is finished and that the sacred articles and the exiles will return within two years. Jeremiah answers with an emphatic “Amen!”, though his agreement comes with a rather sturdy qualification: peace-prophecy must wait for events to keep their appointment. Hananiah then removes the yoke from Jeremiah’s neck and breaks it, making a sermon illustration of the moment. Jeremiah, sensibly, goes on his way.

The wooden yoke acquires an iron sequelvv. 12–17

Shortly after the demonstration, the word of the LORD sends Jeremiah back with an explanation: Hananiah has not abolished the yoke but upgraded it, from wood to iron, with Nebuchadnezzar still presiding over the nations and even the beasts of the field. Jeremiah then tells Hananiah that the LORD did not send him and gives a grim timetable: he will die that year for preaching rebellion. The timetable is kept with startling economy; in the seventh month, Hananiah dies.

  1. Jer 28:1In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, near the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people:

  2. Jer 28:2“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

  3. Jer 28:3Within two years I will restore to this place all the articles of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and carried to Babylon.

  4. Jer 28:4And I will restore to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the LORD, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

  5. Jer 28:5Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD.

  6. Jer 28:6“Amen!” Jeremiah said. “May the LORD do so! May the LORD fulfill the words you have prophesied, and may He restore the articles of His house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.

  7. Jer 28:7Nevertheless, listen now to this message I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.

  8. Jer 28:8The prophets of old who preceded you and me prophesied war, disaster, and plague against many lands and great kingdoms.

  9. Jer 28:9As for the prophet who prophesies peace, only if the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the LORD has truly sent.”

  10. Jer 28:10Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.

  11. Jer 28:11And in the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the LORD says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the neck of all the nations.’” At this, Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.

  12. Jer 28:12But shortly after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off his neck, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

  13. Jer 28:13“Go and tell Hananiah that this is what the LORD says: ‘You have broken a yoke of wood, but in its place you have fashioned a yoke of iron.’

  14. Jer 28:14For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him control of the beasts of the field.’”

  15. Jer 28:15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, but you have persuaded this people to trust in a lie.

  16. Jer 28:16Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’”

  17. Jer 28:17And in the seventh month of that very year, the prophet Hananiah died.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
