The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

For six years, Athaliah ruled the land while Joash, hidden with his nurse in a bedroom of the house of God, stayed alive.

A visit with an unfortunate itineraryvv. 1–9

The raiders had killed the older sons, so Jerusalem made Ahaziah king. His mother Athaliah counselled him into the ways of Ahab, and the young king followed Joram of Israel against Hazael at Ramoth-gilead. When Joram was wounded, Ahaziah went down to Jezreel to visit him—a courteous errand which turned out to have the worst possible appointment attached. There he went out with Joram to meet Jehu, the man anointed to destroy Ahab’s house. Jehu’s soldiers found Ahaziah hiding in Samaria, and after his death he was buried for the sake of his grandfather Jehoshaphat, who had sought the LORD with all his heart.

The royal bedroomvv. 10–12

Athaliah saw that her son was dead and set about annihilating the royal heirs of Judah. Jehoshabeath, Ahaziah’s sister and Jehoiada’s wife, stole Joash away from the slaughter and put him with his nurse in a bedroom. The hiding place was the house of God, where Joash remained for six years while Athaliah ruled the land: a kingdom above stairs, one small prince below them, and history waiting very quietly.

  1. 2 Chr 22:1Then the people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, king in his place, since the raiders who had come into the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.

  2. 2 Chr 22:2Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.

  3. 2 Chr 22:3Ahaziah also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother was his counselor in wickedness.

  4. 2 Chr 22:4And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as the house of Ahab had done, for to his destruction they were his counselors after the death of his father.

  5. 2 Chr 22:5Ahaziah also followed their counsel and went with Joram son of Ahab king of Israel to fight against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead. But the Arameans wounded Joram.

  6. 2 Chr 22:6So he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to visit Joram son of Ahab, because Joram had been wounded.

  7. 2 Chr 22:7Ahaziah’s downfall came from God when he went to visit Joram. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out with Joram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab.

  8. 2 Chr 22:8So while Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the rulers of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers who were serving Ahaziah, and he killed them.

  9. 2 Chr 22:9Then Jehu looked for Ahaziah, and Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So Ahaziah was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one was left from the house of Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.

  10. 2 Chr 22:10When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs of the house of Judah.

  11. 2 Chr 22:11But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was Ahaziah’s sister, she hid Joash from Athaliah so that she could not kill him.

  12. 2 Chr 22:12And Joash remained hidden with them in the house of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
