The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A boy is bartered for a prostitute, a girl for wine, and the reckoning that follows is conducted on the scale of nations.

The scattered inheritancevv. 1–8

The LORD promises to restore Judah and Jerusalem, then gathers the nations into the Valley of Jehoshaphat to answer for scattering Israel and dividing the land. The prices paid for human beings are presented with a dreadful neatness: a boy for a prostitute, a girl for wine. Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia are accused of carrying away silver, gold, and treasures, and of selling Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks; their sons and daughters will in turn be sold to the Sabeans.

The valley of decisionvv. 9–16

The nations are summoned to war, with plowshares and pruning hooks turned into swords and spears, while even the weak are told to declare strength. They are drawn toward the Valley of Jehoshaphat, where the LORD sits to judge. The language changes from battlefield to harvest: sickle, grapes, winepress, overflowing vats. Multitudes fill the valley, the lights of heaven fail, and the LORD roars from Zion and Jerusalem.

Water in the dry countryvv. 17–21

Jerusalem is declared holy, and foreigners will no longer overrun it. Then the scenery takes an extravagant turn: mountains drip with sweet wine, hills flow with milk, Judah's streams run with water, and a spring from the LORD's house waters the Valley of Acacias. Egypt becomes desolate and Edom a wasteland because of violence against Judah, while Judah and Jerusalem remain inhabited from generation to generation. The final word is that the LORD will avenge blood not yet avenged, and still dwells in Zion.

  1. Joel 3:1“Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore Judah and Jerusalem from captivity,

  2. Joel 3:2I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning My people, My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations as they divided up My land.

  3. Joel 3:3They cast lots for My people; they bartered a boy for a prostitute and sold a girl for wine to drink.

  4. Joel 3:4Now what do you have against Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering against Me a recompense? If you retaliate against Me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your heads.

  5. Joel 3:5For you took My silver and gold and carried off My finest treasures to your temples.

  6. Joel 3:6You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, to send them far from their homeland.

  7. Joel 3:7Behold, I will rouse them from the places to which you sold them; I will return your recompense upon your heads.

  8. Joel 3:8I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans—to a distant nation.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.

  9. Joel 3:9Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack!

  10. Joel 3:10Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’

  11. Joel 3:11Come quickly, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves. Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD.

  12. Joel 3:12Let the nations be roused and advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit down to judge all the nations on every side.

  13. Joel 3:13Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full; the wine vats overflow because their wickedness is great.

  14. Joel 3:14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

  15. Joel 3:15The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine.

  16. Joel 3:16The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice from Jerusalem; heaven and earth will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for His people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

  17. Joel 3:17Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, never again to be overrun by foreigners.

  18. Joel 3:18And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of Acacias.

  19. Joel 3:19Egypt will become desolate, and Edom a desert wasteland, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.

  20. Joel 3:20But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

  21. Joel 3:21For I will avenge their blood, which I have not yet avenged.” For the LORD dwells in Zion.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
