The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A figure comes from Edom in splendid robes, crimson from a winepress he has trodden alone, with the rather alarming explanation that the stain is the blood of nations.

The solitary winepressvv. 1–6

The scene begins with two questions aimed at a magnificent, blood-spattered arrival from Edom and Bozrah. The answer is splendidly grim: he has trodden the winepress alone, with no help from the nations, and his garments have taken the full consequence. He looked for assistance and found none; his own arm and wrath did the work. It is a victory scene with only one pair of footprints.

Carried, then opposedvv. 7–14

The voice turns from the solitary figure to the LORD’s history with His people. He became their Savior, redeemed them in love and compassion, and lifted them up and carried them. Then they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit, and the rescuer became their enemy. Remembering the days of Moses, the people recall the sea, the waters divided by the glorious arm, the passage through the depths, and the Spirit giving them rest like cattle descending into a valley.

A father not recognisedvv. 15–19

The final movement is a plea from below: look down from heaven, where zeal and compassion seem restrained. The people call the LORD their Father even while saying that Abraham does not know them and Israel does not acknowledge them. They ask why they have been made to stray and plead for His return, while their holy place has been briefly possessed and their sanctuary trampled. The last line leaves them resembling people never ruled or called by His name—a remarkably bleak way to end a family address.

  1. Isa 63:1Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah with crimson-stained garments? Who is this robed in splendor, marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I, proclaiming vindication, mighty to save.”

  2. Isa 63:2Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?

  3. Isa 63:3“I have trodden the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I trampled them in My anger and trod them down in My fury; their blood spattered My garments, and all My clothes were stained.

  4. Isa 63:4For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redemption had come.

  5. Isa 63:5I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that no one assisted. So My arm brought Me salvation, and My own wrath upheld Me.

  6. Isa 63:6I trampled the nations in My anger; in My wrath I made them drunk and poured out their blood on the ground.”

  7. Isa 63:7I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His praiseworthy acts, because of all that the LORD has done for us—the many good things for the house of Israel according to His great compassion and loving devotion.

  8. Isa 63:8For He said, “They are surely My people, sons who will not be disloyal.” So He became their Savior.

  9. Isa 63:9In all their distress, He too was afflicted, and the Angel of His Presence saved them. In His love and compassion He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

  10. Isa 63:10But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He Himself fought against them.

  11. Isa 63:11Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them through the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them,

  12. Isa 63:12who sent His glorious arm to lead them by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for Himself everlasting renown,

  13. Isa 63:13who led them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble?

  14. Isa 63:14Like cattle going down to the valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. You led Your people this way to make for Yourself a glorious name.

  15. Isa 63:15Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious habitation. Where are Your zeal and might? Your yearning and compassion for me are restrained.

  16. Isa 63:16Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

  17. Isa 63:17Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways and harden our hearts from fearing You? Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.

  18. Isa 63:18For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place, but our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary.

  19. Isa 63:19We have become like those You never ruled, like those not called by Your name.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
