Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.
The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The Jordan backs up as far as Adam, a city near Zarethan, while the priests stand in the middle of the river on dry ground and wait for an entire nation to pass. The geography is exact; the reason for Adam’s starring role is left charmingly unsaid.
The ark goes aheadvv. 1–13
Joshua leads Israel from Shittim to the Jordan, where the people camp for three days. The officers give careful instructions: follow the ark, keep two thousand cubits behind it, and do not approach, since this is a road no one has travelled before. Joshua announces wonders for the next day, and the priests are told to carry the ark ahead. Twelve men are to be chosen, one from each tribe, though the chapter does not yet say what they are for—a neat little loose end just before the river does something enormous.
The river waitsvv. 14–17
The Jordan is overflowing its banks, which makes the priests’ next instruction wonderfully ill-timed by ordinary standards. They step into the water carrying the ark, the flow stops, and the water backs up as far upstream as Adam, in the area of Zarethan. Meanwhile the water running toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, is cut off. The priests then stand firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until every last person has crossed opposite Jericho: a miracle with the practical patience of a ferry crossing.

Josh 3:1Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.
Josh 3:2After three days the officers went through the camp
Josh 3:3and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.
Josh 3:4But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
Josh 3:5Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”
Josh 3:6And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went ahead of them.
Josh 3:7Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.
Josh 3:8Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’”
Josh 3:9So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.”
Josh 3:10He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.
Josh 3:11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go ahead of you into the Jordan.
Josh 3:12Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
Josh 3:13When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—touch down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing waters will be cut off and will stand up in a heap.”
Josh 3:14So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of them.
Josh 3:15Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge,
Josh 3:16the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
Josh 3:17The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation had crossed the Jordan.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
