The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The lamps are to burn continually; then, in the camp, a man is held until the LORD's ruling arrives—and the ruling sends the whole assembly outside with stones.

Light, bread, and a carefully furnished tablevv. 1–9

The chapter begins with oil pressed from olives, lamps kept burning from evening until morning, and Aaron tending them before the LORD. Twelve loaves are arranged in two rows on the table of pure gold, with frankincense beside them; every Sabbath they are set out for Israel, and then belong to Aaron and his sons in a holy place. It is an immaculate little arrangement, right down to the flour and the incense.

The camp waits for a rulingvv. 10–23

Then the chapter leaves the lampstand for a fight in the camp. The man at its centre is identified through his mother, Shelomith daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan; he blasphemes the Name with a curse, and Moses receives him into custody while the people wait for the LORD's will to be made clear. The ruling is severe and notably even-handed in its reach: foreign resident and native alike, blasphemy and killing alike, are placed under the same stated law. An animal killed means restitution—"life for life"—while a man killed means death. Once the word comes, the waiting ends briskly: the man is taken outside the camp, stoned, and the Israelites do exactly as commanded.

  1. Lev 24:1Then the LORD said to Moses,

  2. Lev 24:2“Command the Israelites to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.

  3. Lev 24:3Outside the veil of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps continually before the LORD from evening until morning. This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to come.

  4. Lev 24:4He shall tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD continually.

  5. Lev 24:5You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves, using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf,

  6. Lev 24:6and set them in two rows—six per row—on the table of pure gold before the LORD.

  7. Lev 24:7And you are to place pure frankincense near each row, so that it may serve as a memorial portion for the bread, a food offering to the LORD.

  8. Lev 24:8Every Sabbath day the bread is to be set out before the LORD on behalf of the Israelites as a permanent covenant.

  9. Lev 24:9It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place; for it is to him a most holy part of the food offerings to the LORD—his portion forever.”

  10. Lev 24:10Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father went out among the Israelites, and a fight broke out in the camp between him and an Israelite.

  11. Lev 24:11The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name with a curse. So they brought him to Moses. (His mother’s name was Shelomith daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.)

  12. Lev 24:12They placed him in custody until the will of the LORD should be made clear to them.

  13. Lev 24:13Then the LORD said to Moses,

  14. Lev 24:14“Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and have all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then have the whole assembly stone him.

  15. Lev 24:15And you are to tell the Israelites, ‘If anyone curses his God, he shall bear the consequences of his sin.

  16. Lev 24:16Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must surely be put to death; the whole assembly must surely stone him, whether he is a foreign resident or native; if he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death.

  17. Lev 24:17And if a man takes the life of anyone else, he must surely be put to death.

  18. Lev 24:18Whoever kills an animal must make restitution—life for life.

  19. Lev 24:19If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him:

  20. Lev 24:20fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Just as he injured the other person, the same must be inflicted on him.

  21. Lev 24:21Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death.

  22. Lev 24:22You are to have the same standard of law for the foreign resident and the native; for I am the LORD your God.’”

  23. Lev 24:23Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him. So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
