What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Joab began counting the men, did not finish, and left the king’s census without a number—a remarkably poor ending for a counting exercise, especially after wrath had come upon Israel.

Twelve divisions, one month eachvv. 1–15

The army is arranged with almost theatrical punctuality: twelve divisions, each 24,000 strong, each taking its turn for one month. Jashobeam begins the year, followed by Dodai, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Asahel, Shamhuth, Ira, Helez, Sibbecai, Abiezer, Maharai, Benaiah the Pirathonite, and Heldai. Benaiah’s son Ammizabad takes charge of his division, and Asahel’s son Zebadiah commands after him; even the roster has a little succession drama tucked into its margins.

The count that stopsvv. 16–24

The tribal officers are then named, tribe by tribe, with Eliezer over the Reubenites and Azarel over Dan, while Benjamin has Jaasiel and one half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead has Iddo. David deliberately excludes those aged twenty or under, because the LORD had promised Israel a number like the stars. Joab starts the count but cannot bring it to a conclusion; wrath follows, and the unfinished number is not entered in the royal book. The census, in the end, is chiefly remembered for failing to become a number.

The king’s property and the royal circlevv. 25–34

The chapter turns from men to possessions: storehouses, fields, vineyards, olive and sycamore trees, herds, camels, donkeys, and flocks all receive their own officials. Jehdeiah is in charge of the donkeys, who thereby acquire a place in the royal administration alongside the vineyards and the herds of Sharon. David’s uncle Jonathan serves as counselor and scribe, Hushai is the king’s friend, and Ahithophel’s succession runs through Jehoiada son of Benaiah and then Abiathar. Joab, having failed to finish one count, remains commander of the king’s army.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
