Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Ephraim sees sickness, Judah a wound, and Assyria receives the medical call—only to be told that the great king cannot heal either.

Snares, flocks, and the hungry New Moonvv. 1–7

The priests, Israel, and the royal house are summoned to hear judgment. Mizpah has become a snare and Tabor a net; the rebels are deep in slaughter, while Ephraim and Israel are exposed as plainly as a badly hidden secret. Their deeds have made return impossible, and even Judah stumbles with them. They bring flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but the search ends with the LORD withdrawn. Then the New Moon appears, rather unexpectedly, as something with an appetite for people and land.

Trumpets, boundary stones, and a useless physicianvv. 8–14

The alarm runs through Gibeah, Ramah, Beth-aven, and Benjamin. Ephraim is declared destined for waste, while Judah’s princes are compared to men shifting boundary stones—a small movement with remarkably large consequences. Ephraim follows worthless idols and is crushed in judgment; the LORD is a moth to Ephraim and decay to Judah, then a lion and a young lion. Ephraim sees sickness and Judah a wound, so Ephraim turns to Assyria and sends to the great king. The proposed healer, however, cannot cure the sickness or heal the wound.

The retreatv. 15

After tearing them away, the LORD returns to His place. The silence is not explained further; the next movement belongs to them, when they admit their guilt and seek His face in their affliction.

  1. Hos 5:1“Hear this, O priests! Take heed, O house of Israel! Give ear, O royal house! For this judgment is against you because you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

  2. Hos 5:2The rebels are deep in slaughter; but I will chastise them all.

  3. Hos 5:3I know all about Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now, O Ephraim, you have turned to prostitution; Israel is defiled.

  4. Hos 5:4Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God, for a spirit of prostitution is within them, and they do not know the LORD.

  5. Hos 5:5Israel’s arrogance testifies against them; Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity; even Judah stumbles with them.

  6. Hos 5:6They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they do not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.

  7. Hos 5:7They have been unfaithful to the LORD; for they have borne illegitimate children. Now the New Moon will devour them along with their land.

  8. Hos 5:8Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah, the trumpet in Ramah; raise the battle cry in Beth-aven: Lead on, O Benjamin!

  9. Hos 5:9Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of rebuke. Among the tribes of Israel I proclaim what is certain.

  10. Hos 5:10The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary stones; I will pour out My fury upon them like water.

  11. Hos 5:11Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, for he is determined to follow worthless idols.

  12. Hos 5:12So I am like a moth to Ephraim, and like decay to the house of Judah.

  13. Hos 5:13When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, then Ephraim turned to Assyria and sent to the great king. But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.

  14. Hos 5:14For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear them to pieces and then go away. I will carry them off where no one can rescue them.

  15. Hos 5:15Then I will return to My place until they admit their guilt and seek My face; in their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
