What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A sea dragon is dispatched with a sword, while a fortified city ends as a calf-haunted woodpile.

The dragon and the vineyardvv. 1–6

The LORD takes a sharp, great, and mighty sword to Leviathan, named twice as both fleeing and coiling, before slaying the dragon of the sea. Then the scene turns rather briskly from cosmic reptile to vineyard song: the LORD waters and guards His planting night and day, and invites even thorns and briers to make peace. Jacob will take root, Israel will blossom, and the whole world will receive its fruit.

The city becomes a woodpilevv. 7–13

The LORD's dealings with Israel are set beside the fate of her oppressors: warfare and exile have been a fierce east wind, and Jacob's guilt is answered by the pulverising of altar stones and the disappearance of Asherah poles and incense altars. A fortified city is then left as a deserted homestead, where calves graze and women gather its dry branches for kindling—a remarkably ordinary household after so grand a judgment. At last the LORD threshes from the Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, gathers the Israelites one by one, and brings the scattered from Assyria and Egypt to worship on the holy mountain in Jerusalem when the great ram's horn sounds.

  1. Isa 27:1In that day the LORD will take His sharp, great, and mighty sword, and bring judgment on Leviathan the fleeing serpent—Leviathan the coiling serpent—and He will slay the dragon of the sea.

  2. Isa 27:2In that day: “Sing about a fruitful vineyard.

  3. Isa 27:3I, the LORD, am its keeper; I water it continually. I guard it night and day so no one can disturb it;

  4. Isa 27:4I am not angry. If only thorns and briers confronted Me, I would march and trample them, I would burn them to the ground.

  5. Isa 27:5Or let them lay claim to My protection; let them make peace with Me—yes, let them make peace with Me.”

  6. Isa 27:6In the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will bud and blossom and fill the whole world with fruit.

  7. Isa 27:7Has the LORD struck Israel as He struck her oppressors? Was she killed like those who slayed her?

  8. Isa 27:8By warfare and exile You contended with her and removed her with a fierce wind, as on the day the east wind blows.

  9. Isa 27:9Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be atoned for, and the full fruit of the removal of his sin will be this: When he makes all the altar stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.

  10. Isa 27:10For the fortified city lies deserted—a homestead abandoned, a wilderness forsaken. There the calves graze, and there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.

  11. Isa 27:11When its limbs are dry, they are broken off. Women come and use them for kindling; for this is a people without understanding. Therefore their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

  12. Isa 27:12In that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered one by one.

  13. Isa 27:13And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
