The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The LORD creates the man who forges weapons and the destroyer who uses them, then declares that no weapon formed against the afflicted city will prosper. It is a wonderfully close meeting of manufacture and futility.

The barren woman gets the larger tentvv. 1–10

A woman with no children is told to shout for joy, because her household will outnumber that of the woman with a husband. Her tent must expand, its ropes lengthened and stakes driven deep, while her descendants spread right and left. The language then turns from household to marriage: the LORD, Maker and Redeemer, calls back the wife who was deserted, promising compassion after anger and a covenant of peace that will survive even shaken mountains and removed hills.

A city dressed like a treasuryvv. 11–14

The afflicted city, lashed by storms and left without solace, receives a restoration plan of almost indecent specificity. Its stones are set in antimony, its foundations laid with sapphires, its pinnacles made of rubies, and its gates turned into sparkling jewels. Its sons are taught by the LORD, prosperity follows, and oppression and terror are moved well away.

The weapons are made, and still do not winvv. 15–17

Attackers may appear, but their assault is not from the LORD and they will fall before the city. Then comes the curious workshop in the margin of the promise: the LORD has created the craftsman at the coals, the weapon, and the destroyer who wreaks havoc. Yet the finished weapon has no final say; every accusing tongue is refuted, and the servants of the LORD inherit vindication from Him.

  1. Isa 54:1“Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.

  2. Isa 54:2“Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not hold back. Lengthen your ropes and drive your stakes in deep.

  3. Isa 54:3For you will spread out to the right and left; your descendants will dispossess the nations and inhabit the desolate cities.

  4. Isa 54:4Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame; do not be intimidated, for you will not be humiliated. For you will forget the shame of your youth and will remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.

  5. Isa 54:5For your husband is your Maker—the LORD of Hosts is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.

  6. Isa 54:6For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife of one’s youth,” says your God.

  7. Isa 54:7“For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will bring you back.

  8. Isa 54:8In a surge of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD your Redeemer.

  9. Isa 54:9“For to Me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So I have sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you.

  10. Isa 54:10Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

  11. Isa 54:11“O afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace, surely I will set your stones in antimony and lay your foundations with sapphires.

  12. Isa 54:12I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones.

  13. Isa 54:13Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their prosperity.

  14. Isa 54:14In righteousness you will be established, far from oppression, for you will have no fear. Terror will be far removed, for it will not come near you.

  15. Isa 54:15If anyone attacks you, it is not from Me; whoever assails you will fall before you.

  16. Isa 54:16Behold, I have created the craftsman who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its task; and I have created the destroyer to wreak havoc.

  17. Isa 54:17No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
