The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A king is promised a donkey’s burial: dragged away and thrown outside Jerusalem, with no one calling after him, “Alas, my splendor!”

The palace and the cedarsvv. 1–9

The LORD sends a word down to the palace of the king of Judah, where king, officials, and people are told to administer justice, rescue the robbed, and leave the foreigner, fatherless, widow, and innocent blood unharmed. Obedience would keep David’s kings riding through the palace gates; disobedience would reduce the royal house to rubble. The fine cedarwork is not spared: destroyers will cut it down and burn it, leaving passing nations to ask why such a great city was treated so. The answer is compact and ruinous: the covenant was forsaken, and other gods were served.

The kings who go and the king who is draggedvv. 10–19

The chapter turns mourning upside down. The dead are not to receive the tears; the exiled man deserves bitter weeping because he will never return. Shallum son of Josiah is named as one who went out from this place and will die away from the land. Then comes the palace-builder, with unpaid countrymen beneath him and cedar, windows, and vermilion above him. His father had food and drink, but also justice, and that is the detail that matters here. Jehoiakim son of Josiah receives no family lament and no royal farewell: he will be buried like a donkey, dragged away and thrown outside Jerusalem’s gates.

The signet ring pulled offvv. 20–30

The voice calls from Lebanon, Bashan, and Abarim, though the landscape offers no shelter from the news: shepherds and lovers are driven away, and shame follows wickedness. Coniah son of Jehoiakim is then handled with the chapter’s most startling comparison. Even if he were a signet ring on the LORD’s right hand, he would be pulled off and handed to Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldeans. He and his mother will die in another land, while the land he longs for remains out of reach. Then the address falls upon the land three times—“O land, land, land”—before Coniah is enrolled as childless, with none of his descendants prospering on David’s throne or ruling again in Judah.

  1. Jer 22:1This is what the LORD says: “Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there,

  2. Jer 22:2saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, who sits on the throne of David—you and your officials and your people who enter these gates.

  3. Jer 22:3This is what the LORD says: Administer justice and righteousness. Rescue the victim of robbery from the hand of his oppressor. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow. Do not shed innocent blood in this place.

  4. Jer 22:4For if you will indeed carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David’s throne will enter through the gates of this palace riding on chariots and horses—they and their officials and their people.

  5. Jer 22:5But if you do not obey these words, then I swear by Myself, declares the LORD, that this house will become a pile of rubble.’”

  6. Jer 22:6For this is what the LORD says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are like Gilead to Me, like the summit of Lebanon; but I will surely turn you into a desert, like cities that are uninhabited.

  7. Jer 22:7I will appoint destroyers against you, each man with his weapons, and they will cut down the choicest of your cedars and throw them into the fire.

  8. Jer 22:8And many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’

  9. Jer 22:9Then people will reply, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’”

  10. Jer 22:10Do not weep for him who is dead; do not mourn his loss. Weep bitterly for him who is exiled, for he will never return to see his native land.

  11. Jer 22:11For this is what the LORD says concerning Shallum son of Josiah, king of Judah, who succeeded his father Josiah but has gone forth from this place: “He will never return,

  12. Jer 22:12but he will die in the place to which he was exiled; he will never see this land again.”

  13. Jer 22:13“Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and fails to pay their wages,

  14. Jer 22:14who says, ‘I will build myself a great palace, with spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts windows in it, panels it with cedar, and paints it with vermilion.

  15. Jer 22:15Does it make you a king to excel in cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He administered justice and righteousness, and so it went well with him.

  16. Jer 22:16He took up the cause of the poor and needy, and so it went well with him. Is this not what it means to know Me?” declares the LORD.

  17. Jer 22:17“But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except your own dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood, on practicing extortion and oppression.”

  18. Jer 22:18Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’ They will not mourn for him: ‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’

  19. Jer 22:19He will be buried like a donkey, dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.

  20. Jer 22:20Go up to Lebanon and cry out; raise your voice in Bashan; cry out from Abarim, for all your lovers have been crushed.

  21. Jer 22:21I warned you when you were secure. You said, ‘I will not listen.’ This has been your way from youth, that you have not obeyed My voice.

  22. Jer 22:22The wind will drive away all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be ashamed and humiliated because of all your wickedness.

  23. Jer 22:23O inhabitant of Lebanon, nestled in the cedars, how you will groan when pangs of anguish come upon you, agony like a woman in labor.”

  24. Jer 22:24“As surely as I live,” declares the LORD, “even if you, Coniah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on My right hand, I would pull you off.

  25. Jer 22:25In fact, I will hand you over to those you dread, who want to take your life—to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Chaldeans.

  26. Jer 22:26I will hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another land, where neither of you were born—and there you both will die.

  27. Jer 22:27You will never return to the land for which you long.”

  28. Jer 22:28Is this man Coniah a despised and shattered pot, a jar that no one wants? Why are he and his descendants hurled out and cast into a land they do not know?

  29. Jer 22:29O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD!

  30. Jer 22:30This is what the LORD says: “Enroll this man as childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime. None of his descendants will prosper to sit on the throne of David or to rule again in Judah.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
