What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Samaria’s punishment ends in a remarkably awkward financial afterlife: the wages she gathered as a prostitute are assigned to another prostitute, while her stones are poured into a valley and her foundations exposed.

The LORD comes downvv. 1–9

Micah receives the word of the LORD in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. The LORD leaves His dwelling place, treads the high places, and turns mountains to melting wax and valleys to rushing water. Samaria is named as Jacob’s transgression and Jerusalem as Judah’s high place; Samaria will become rubble, her images will be smashed, her wages burned, and then—because they were gathered as a prostitute’s wages—used again on a prostitute. Micah answers with an astonishingly physical lament: barefoot, naked, howling like a jackal and mourning like an ostrich. The wound has reached Judah and is already approaching Jerusalem.

A procession of bad newsvv. 10–16

The oracle suddenly becomes a string of instructions to towns. Gath is not to hear the news; Beth-leaphrah is to receive dust; Shaphir must leave in shameful nakedness; Zaanan will not come out; Beth-ezel mourns because its support is gone. Maroth longs for good, but calamity reaches the gate of Jerusalem. Lachish is told to harness its chariot horses, Moresheth-gath receives farewell gifts, Achzib proves deceptive to Israel’s kings, and a conqueror is brought against Mareshah. The chapter ends with heads shaved in mourning for precious children who will go into exile, while the glory of Israel comes to Adullam.

  1. Mic 1:1This is the word of the LORD that came to Micah the Moreshite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah—what he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem:

  2. Mic 1:2Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth, and everyone in it! May the Lord GOD bear witness against you, the Lord from His holy temple.

  3. Mic 1:3For behold, the LORD comes forth from His dwelling place; He will come down and tread on the high places of the earth.

  4. Mic 1:4The mountains will melt beneath Him, and the valleys will split apart, like wax before the fire, like water rushing down a slope.

  5. Mic 1:5All this is for the transgression of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?

  6. Mic 1:6Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble in the open field, a planting area for a vineyard. I will pour her stones into the valley and expose her foundations.

  7. Mic 1:7All her carved images will be smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire, and I will destroy all her idols. Since she collected the wages of a prostitute, they will be used again on a prostitute.

  8. Mic 1:8Because of this I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and mourn like an ostrich.

  9. Mic 1:9For her wound is incurable; it has reached even Judah; it has approached the gate of my people, as far as Jerusalem itself.

  10. Mic 1:10Do not tell it in Gath; do not weep at all. Roll in the dust in Beth-leaphrah.

  11. Mic 1:11Depart in shameful nakedness, O dwellers of Shaphir. The dwellers of Zaanan will not come out. Beth-ezel is in mourning; its support is taken from you.

  12. Mic 1:12For the dwellers of Maroth pined for good, but calamity came down from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem.

  13. Mic 1:13Harness your chariot horses, O dweller of Lachish. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.

  14. Mic 1:14Therefore, send farewell gifts to Moresheth-gath; the houses of Achzib will prove deceptive to the kings of Israel.

  15. Mic 1:15I will again bring a conqueror against you, O dweller of Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

  16. Mic 1:16Shave yourselves bald and cut off your hair in mourning for your precious children; make yourselves as bald as an eagle, for they will go from you into exile.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
