What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
A sea flees, a river reverses, mountains skip like rams, and the rock begins behaving like a fountain.
The landscape takes flightvv. 1–4
Israel departs from Egypt, and the house of Jacob leaves behind a people of foreign tongue. Judah becomes God’s sanctuary, Israel His dominion; then the sea flees, the Jordan turns back, and the mountains and hills skip together in an unexpectedly pastoral spectacle.
The questions, and the water from stonevv. 5–8
The sea, the Jordan, the mountains, and the hills are summoned to explain their extraordinary behaviour. No answer is supplied. Instead, the earth is told to tremble at the presence of the Lord, who turns rock into a pool and flint into a fountain of water—the sort of conclusion that leaves ordinary geology standing rather awkwardly at the door.
