Description

Laodicea in the text

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Laodicea was a city located in the Lycus Valley in the Roman province of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). The city is mentioned several times in the New Testament, particularly in Paul's letter to the Colossians and in the book of Revelation. Paul mentions his concern for the believers in Laodicea, even though he had not personally visited the city (Col.2.1). He also sends greetings to the Laodicean church and instructs the Colossians to share his letter with them (Col.4.13, 15-16). In the book of Revelation, Laodicea is one of the seven churches addressed by Jesus Christ. The Laodicean church is rebuked for being lukewarm in their faith, neither hot nor cold, and for their self-sufficiency and spiritual complacency (Revelation 3:14-16). Despite their material wealth, Jesus declares them to be spiritually poor, blind, and naked, urging them to repent and seek true spiritual riches from Him (Revelation 3:17-18).

The pattern

Where Laodicea is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

7 verses across 3 of 66 books; 63 write the name nowhere. Named in Colossians (4), 1 Timothy (1) and Revelation (2).

Laodicea is named in 7 verses, and the name is written 9 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 63 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
