What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

When the temple foundation is laid, the congregation makes such a racket that joy and weeping become indistinguishable.

The altar before the templevv. 1–7

By the seventh month, Israel had settled in its towns and assembled as one in Jerusalem. Jeshua and Zerubbabel began with the altar, setting it upon its foundation and offering the morning and evening burnt offerings, despite fearing the people of the land. The Feast of Tabernacles followed, along with the regular offerings, the offerings for New Moons and sacred feasts, and the freewill offerings. The temple itself had not yet found its foundation, but its altar was already very much in business. Cedar was ordered from Lebanon, brought by sea to Joppa by the people of Sidon and Tyre, with Cyrus’s authorization and payment in food, drink, oil, and money.

A foundation, and an unmixable noisevv. 8–13

In the second month of the second year, the building began. Levites twenty years old and upward were appointed to supervise it, and Jeshua, Kadmiel, the sons of Henadad, and their families joined the work. When the foundation was laid, the priests took up trumpets and the sons of Asaph cymbals, praising the LORD in the manner prescribed by David. The people answered with a great shout. Then the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple wept loudly, while others shouted for joy. The result was not a tidy alternation of sounds but a single vast confusion, heard from afar: praise, grief, and no reliable way to tell which was which.

  1. Ezra 3:1By the seventh month, the Israelites had settled in their towns, and the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.

  2. Ezra 3:2Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.

  3. Ezra 3:3They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD—both the morning and evening burnt offerings—even though they feared the people of the land.

  4. Ezra 3:4They also celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles in accordance with what is written, and they offered burnt offerings daily based on the number prescribed for each day.

  5. Ezra 3:5After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings and those for New Moons and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as all the freewill offerings brought to the LORD.

  6. Ezra 3:6On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.

  7. Ezra 3:7They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.

  8. Ezra 3:8In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.

  9. Ezra 3:9So Jeshua and his sons and brothers, Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Yehudah), and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together to supervise those working on the house of God.

  10. Ezra 3:10When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their positions to praise the LORD, as David king of Israel had prescribed.

  11. Ezra 3:11And they sang responsively with praise and thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures forever.” Then all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD had been laid.

  12. Ezra 3:12But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others shouted joyfully.

  13. Ezra 3:13The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard from afar.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
