What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The priests are forbidden to mourn their brothers or leave the sanctuary, while their cousins carry the bodies away in their tunics; then Moses turns from death to the proper disposal of a goat and is satisfied by a hypothetical question.

Fire, silence, and the cousins’ errandvv. 1–7

Nadab and Abihu bring censers, fire, and incense before the LORD, but the fire is unauthorized. Fire comes out, consumes them, and leaves Aaron silent after Moses explains the holiness and glory revealed in their deaths. Moses then summons Mishael and Elizaphan, sons of Uzziel, to carry their cousins outside the camp, while Aaron, Eleazar, and Ithamar are forbidden to dishevel their hair, tear their garments, or leave the Tent of Meeting. The practical work belongs to the cousins; the priests must remain where they are, in their tunics and under instruction.

The rules continuevv. 8–15

The LORD speaks to Aaron about wine, strong drink, and the distinction between the holy and the common, the clean and the unclean. Moses then resumes the instructions: Aaron and his remaining sons are to eat the grain offering beside the altar, and the family may eat the wave offering and contribution in a ceremonially clean place. Even after the fire, the portions are assigned with admirable administrative firmness.

The missing goat and the satisfactory answervv. 16–20

Later, Moses searches carefully for the goat of the sin offering and discovers that it has been burned. He is angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, asking why they did not eat it in the holy place. Aaron answers that, on this very day, after the presentation of their offerings and everything that has happened to him, eating it might not have been acceptable before the LORD. Moses hears the explanation and is satisfied. A chapter that began with fire ends with a question about a meal, and the meal is the matter that receives the final word.

  1. Lev 10:1Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense, and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to His command.

  2. Lev 10:2So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died in the presence of the LORD.

  3. Lev 10:3Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant when He said: ‘To those who come near Me I will show My holiness, and in the sight of all the people I will reveal My glory.’” But Aaron remained silent.

  4. Lev 10:4Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry the bodies of your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.”

  5. Lev 10:5So they came forward and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses had directed.

  6. Lev 10:6Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become disheveled and do not tear your garments, or else you will die, and the LORD will be angry with the whole congregation. But your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may mourn on account of the fire that the LORD has ignited.

  7. Lev 10:7You shall not go outside the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, or you will die, for the LORD’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses instructed.

  8. Lev 10:8Then the LORD said to Aaron,

  9. Lev 10:9“You and your sons are not to drink wine or strong drink when you enter the Tent of Meeting, or else you will die; this is a permanent statute for the generations to come.

  10. Lev 10:10You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the clean and the unclean,

  11. Lev 10:11so that you may teach the Israelites all the statutes that the LORD has given them through Moses.”

  12. Lev 10:12And Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering that remains from the food offerings to the LORD and eat it without leaven beside the altar, because it is most holy.

  13. Lev 10:13You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings to the LORD; for this is what I have been commanded.

  14. Lev 10:14And you and your sons and daughters may eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution in a ceremonially clean place, because these portions have been assigned to you and your children from the peace offerings of the sons of Israel.

  15. Lev 10:15They are to bring the thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering, together with the fat portions of the food offerings, to wave as a wave offering before the LORD. It will belong permanently to you and your children, as the LORD has commanded.”

  16. Lev 10:16Later, Moses searched carefully for the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked,

  17. Lev 10:17“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the congregation by making atonement for them before the LORD.

  18. Lev 10:18Since its blood was not brought inside the holy place, you should have eaten it in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.”

  19. Lev 10:19But Aaron replied to Moses, “Behold, this very day they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. Since these things have happened to me, if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been acceptable in the sight of the LORD?”

  20. Lev 10:20And when Moses heard this explanation, he was satisfied.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
