What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

John is declared greater than everyone born of women, only for the least in the kingdom of heaven to be declared greater than John. The chapter offers the reversal briskly, and leaves it standing there.

John’s question from prisonvv. 1–6

After instructing the twelve, Jesus goes on teaching and preaching in their cities. John, hearing in prison about Christ’s works, sends his disciples with a question of splendid directness: is Jesus the one to come, or not? Jesus answers by pointing to what they hear and see—the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and good news reaches the poor.

A reed, a prophet, and an impossible audiencevv. 7–19

As John’s disciples leave, Jesus asks the crowds what they went into the wilderness to see: a reed wavering in the wind, a finely dressed man, or a prophet. John is more than a prophet, the messenger who prepares the way, and yet the least in the kingdom is greater than he. Then the generation appears as children refusing every tune: it will neither dance to a flute nor mourn to a dirge, finding a demon in John’s abstinence and gluttony in Jesus’ feasting. A remarkably difficult audience, though the chapter says wisdom is vindicated by her actions.

Cities, hidden things, and the easy yokevv. 20–30

Jesus denounces Chorazin and Bethsaida for not repenting, then turns to Capernaum, which is promised not elevation but descent. The comparison is startlingly specific: had Capernaum’s miracles happened in Sodom, Sodom would have remained. After these hard words comes praise to the Father for revealing things to little children, followed by an invitation to the weary and burdened. The final image is a yoke described as easy and a burden described as light.

  1. Matt 11:1After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  2. Matt 11:2Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples

  3. Matt 11:3to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”

  4. Matt 11:4Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:

  5. Matt 11:5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

  6. Matt 11:6Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”

  7. Matt 11:7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

  8. Matt 11:8Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.

  9. Matt 11:9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

  10. Matt 11:10This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’

  11. Matt 11:11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

  12. Matt 11:12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.

  13. Matt 11:13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

  14. Matt 11:14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

  15. Matt 11:15He who has ears, let him hear.

  16. Matt 11:16To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

  17. Matt 11:17‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

  18. Matt 11:18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’

  19. Matt 11:19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”

  20. Matt 11:20Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.

  21. Matt 11:21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

  22. Matt 11:22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

  23. Matt 11:23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

  24. Matt 11:24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

  25. Matt 11:25At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

  26. Matt 11:26Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.

  27. Matt 11:27All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

  28. Matt 11:28Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  29. Matt 11:29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  30. Matt 11:30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
