The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

John’s good news arrives carrying vipers, axes, and a fire that refuses to go out.

Vipers, axes, and the good newsvv. 1–18

The word of God comes to John in the wilderness, and John takes it around the Jordan: baptism, repentance, forgiveness, and a remarkably severe welcome for the crowds. Yet his instructions are plain enough—share clothing and food, collect no more than authorised, use no force or false accusation, and be content with wages. The people wonder whether John is the Christ; John points instead to the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. It is after all this talk of vipers, roots, threshing floors, and unquenchable fire that Luke calls the whole performance good news.

The prison, the river, and the dovevv. 19–22

John rebukes Herod over Herodias and the other evils he has done. Herod’s contribution is delivered with almost bureaucratic modesty: he adds imprisonment to the list. Then, while the people are being baptized, Jesus is baptized too. As Jesus prays, heaven opens; the Holy Spirit comes down in bodily form like a dove, and a voice from heaven names him beloved Son.

A very long way backvv. 23–38

Jesus begins his ministry at about thirty, regarded as the son of Joseph, the son of Heli. The names then proceed in a stately unbroken procession through David, Abraham, Noah, Adam, and finally God. Luke gives the family tree rather more room than the opening scene’s dove, which is saying something.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
