What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Pilate finds Jesus innocent, says so repeatedly, and then hands Him over to be crucified; the verdict is less a judgment than a surrender wearing official robes.

The innocent man passed from ruler to rulervv. 1–25

The whole council brings Jesus to Pilate with a splendid bundle of accusations: rebellion, unpaid taxes, and kingship. Jesus answers the question about being King of the Jews with the wonderfully unhelpful, “You have said so.” Pilate finds no basis for a charge, but when Judea and Galilee enter the discussion, Jesus is sent to Herod, who is delighted at the prospect of a miracle. Herod asks questions at great length and receives no answer at all; then he and his soldiers mock Jesus, dress Him in a fine robe, and send Him back. The two rulers become friends that day, having discovered that shared ridicule is an excellent solvent for old enmity. Pilate still declares Jesus innocent, yet proposes to punish Him before releasing Him. The crowd instead asks for Barabbas, an insurrectionist and murderer, and its clamour prevails. Pilate releases the prisoner and hands Jesus over to their will.

The road to the Skullvv. 26–43

The soldiers lead Jesus away and recruit Simon of Cyrene, who is made to carry the cross behind Him. Women follow, mourning and wailing, but Jesus turns their grief towards the days ahead, when people will call barrenness blessed and ask mountains and hills to cover them. At the place called The Skull, two criminals are crucified beside Him. Jesus asks forgiveness for those doing it while the soldiers divide His garments by lot—a remarkably tidy bit of administration beneath a very untidy sky. Rulers, soldiers, and one criminal mock Him as King, while the other criminal admits that his own punishment is deserved and asks Jesus to remember him. Jesus answers with a promise for that very day.

Darkness, a tomb, and the Sabbath beginningvv. 44–56

From the sixth hour to the ninth, darkness covers the land; the sun is darkened and the temple veil is torn down the middle. Jesus commits His Spirit into the Father’s hands and dies. The centurion gives glory to God and calls Him righteous, while the gathered people return home beating their breasts. Those who knew Jesus, including the women who came from Galilee, remain at a distance. Joseph of Arimathea, who had not agreed with the council’s decision and was waiting for the kingdom of God, asks Pilate for the body. He places it in a new rock-cut tomb. The women see where it is laid, prepare spices and perfumes, and then rest because the Sabbath is beginning.

  1. Luke 23:1Then the whole council rose and led Jesus away to Pilate.

  2. Luke 23:2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.”

  3. Luke 23:3So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

  4. Luke 23:4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”

  5. Luke 23:5But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people all over Judea with His teaching. He began in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

  6. Luke 23:6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.

  7. Luke 23:7And learning that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem at that time.

  8. Luke 23:8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle.

  9. Luke 23:9Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer.

  10. Luke 23:10Meanwhile, the chief priests and scribes stood there, vehemently accusing Him.

  11. Luke 23:11And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate.

  12. Luke 23:12That day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies.

  13. Luke 23:13Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,

  14. Luke 23:14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.

  15. Luke 23:15Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.

  16. Luke 23:16Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”

  17. Luke 23:18But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”

  18. Luke 23:19(Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

  19. Luke 23:20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,

  20. Luke 23:21but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

  21. Luke 23:22A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.”

  22. Luke 23:23But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed.

  23. Luke 23:24So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met.

  24. Luke 23:25As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over to their will.

  25. Luke 23:26As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, and they put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

  26. Luke 23:27A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him.

  27. Luke 23:28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

  28. Luke 23:29Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’

  29. Luke 23:30At that time ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’

  30. Luke 23:31For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

  31. Luke 23:32Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus.

  32. Luke 23:33When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left.

  33. Luke 23:34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.

  34. Luke 23:35The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

  35. Luke 23:36The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine.

  36. Luke 23:37“If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!”

  37. Luke 23:38Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

  38. Luke 23:39One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save Yourself and us!”

  39. Luke 23:40But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?

  40. Luke 23:41We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

  41. Luke 23:42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

  42. Luke 23:43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

  43. Luke 23:44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.

  44. Luke 23:45The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

  45. Luke 23:46Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.

  46. Luke 23:47When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”

  47. Luke 23:48And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.

  48. Luke 23:49But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.

  49. Luke 23:50Now there was a Council member named Joseph, a good and righteous man,

  50. Luke 23:51who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea and was waiting for the kingdom of God.

  51. Luke 23:52He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.

  52. Luke 23:53Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid.

  53. Luke 23:54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was beginning.

  54. Luke 23:55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.

  55. Luke 23:56Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
