Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jesus asks which good work deserves stones, and receives the answer: none of them.

The gate, the shepherd, and the sheepvv. 1–18

Jesus begins with a sheepfold: the proper shepherd enters by the gate, calls his sheep by name, and goes ahead of them. The sheep know his voice, while strangers receive the remarkably practical treatment of being fled from. The listeners do not understand the illustration, so Jesus gives them another sheepfold formulation at once: he is the gate. It is a wonderfully physical gate, one through which the sheep may come in, go out, and find pasture. Then the image acquires a wolf, a fleeing hired hand, other sheep from another fold, and a shepherd who lays down his life only to take it up again.

A divided verdictvv. 19–21

The sheepfold speech produces division rather than a tidy verdict. Some call Jesus demon-possessed and insane; others point to the words and to the opening of blind eyes. The argument is already a small courtroom, with the witnesses disagreeing before anyone has found the usher.

Stones, works, and escapevv. 22–39

Winter finds Jesus in Jerusalem, walking in Solomon’s Colonnade during the Feast of Dedication. The Jews ask him to speak plainly about being the Christ. He answers that his works already speak, and that his sheep listen to his voice. When he says, “I and the Father are one,” stones appear. Jesus asks which of his many good works has earned them; the reply is deliciously exact: none. The charge is blasphemy, because a man is making himself out to be God. Jesus answers with Scripture, then sends the argument back to the works: if he does the works of the Father, believe the works themselves. They try to seize him, but he escapes their grasp.

Back across the Jordanvv. 40–42

Jesus leaves Jerusalem and goes back across the Jordan, to the place where John had first been baptizing. John had performed no sign, the people say, but everything he said about Jesus was true. Many in that place believe in Jesus; the chapter ends not with a stone, but with a stay by the river and a crowd persuaded by words.

  1. John 10:1“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.

  2. John 10:2But the one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

  3. John 10:3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen for his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  4. John 10:4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

  5. John 10:5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because they do not recognize his voice.”

  6. John 10:6Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them.

  7. John 10:7So He said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

  8. John 10:8All who came before Me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  9. John 10:9I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture.

  10. John 10:10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.

  11. John 10:11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

  12. John 10:12The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.

  13. John 10:13The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep.

  14. John 10:14I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me,

  15. John 10:15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.

  16. John 10:16I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd.

  17. John 10:17The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again.

  18. John 10:18No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from My Father.”

  19. John 10:19Again there was division among the Jews because of Jesus’ message.

  20. John 10:20Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane. Why would you listen to Him?”

  21. John 10:21But others replied, “These are not the words of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

  22. John 10:22At that time the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,

  23. John 10:23and Jesus was walking in the temple courts in Solomon’s Colonnade.

  24. John 10:24So the Jews gathered around Him and demanded, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

  25. John 10:25“I already told you,” Jesus replied, “but you did not believe. The works I do in My Father’s name testify on My behalf.

  26. John 10:26But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.

  27. John 10:27My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.

  28. John 10:28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.

  29. John 10:29My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

  30. John 10:30I and the Father are one.”

  31. John 10:31At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.

  32. John 10:32But Jesus responded, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me?”

  33. John 10:33“We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

  34. John 10:34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’?

  35. John 10:35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken—

  36. John 10:36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?

  37. John 10:37If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me.

  38. John 10:38But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father.”

  39. John 10:39At this, they tried again to seize Him, but He escaped their grasp.

  40. John 10:40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there.

  41. John 10:41Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true.”

  42. John 10:42And many in that place believed in Jesus.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
