Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Asa built his defenses out of Baasha’s abandoned works, then imprisoned the man who explained why the whole arrangement was foolish.

Silver, stone, and a sharp wordvv. 1–10

Baasha fortified Ramah to close Judah in. Asa answered by sending the silver and gold from the house of the LORD and the royal palace to Ben-hadad in Damascus, purchasing a treaty-breaking campaign against Israel. Ben-hadad took Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and the store cities of Naphtali; Baasha abandoned Ramah; and Asa turned the abandoned stones and timbers into Geba and Mizpah. Hanani the seer then told Asa that reliance on the king of Aram had let the army of Aram escape his hand. Asa responded by putting Hanani in prison, while also oppressing some of his people—a remarkably brisk descent from clever diplomacy to locking up the commentary.

The feet, the physicians, and the firevv. 11–14

The rest of Asa’s acts are left to the Book of the Kings. In his thirty-ninth year, disease came into his feet and grew increasingly severe. The chapter says he sought only the physicians, without explaining why he did not seek the LORD. Two years later he died, was laid in the tomb he had cut out for himself in the City of David, and received a bier crowded with spices and blended perfumes, followed by a great fire in his honor.

  1. 2 Chr 16:1In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.

  2. 2 Chr 16:2So Asa withdrew the silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent it with this message to Ben-hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:

  3. 2 Chr 16:3“Let there be a treaty between me and you as there was between my father and your father. See, I have sent you silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”

  4. 2 Chr 16:4And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, conquering Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and all the store cities of Naphtali.

  5. 2 Chr 16:5When Baasha learned of this, he stopped fortifying Ramah and abandoned his work.

  6. 2 Chr 16:6Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and the timbers Baasha had used for building. And with these materials he built up Geba and Mizpah.

  7. 2 Chr 16:7At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah and told him, “Because you have relied on the king of Aram and not on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.

  8. 2 Chr 16:8Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army with many chariots and horsemen? Yet because you relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.

  9. 2 Chr 16:9For the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro over all the earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully devoted to Him. You have acted foolishly in this matter. From now on, therefore, you will be at war.”

  10. 2 Chr 16:10Asa was angry with the seer and became so enraged over this matter that he put the man in prison. And at the same time Asa oppressed some of the people.

  11. 2 Chr 16:11Now the acts of Asa, from beginning to end, are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

  12. 2 Chr 16:12In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his disease became increasingly severe. Yet even in his illness he did not seek the LORD, but only the physicians.

  13. 2 Chr 16:13So in the forty-first year of his reign, Asa died and rested with his fathers.

  14. 2 Chr 16:14And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier that was full of spices and various blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in his honor.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
