Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

For forty years, a people saw God's works in the wilderness, while the verdict said their hearts were always going astray and had not known God's ways.

The builder and the housevv. 1–6

Jesus is set beside Moses, but not as a rival servant in the same corridor. Moses was faithful in God's house as a servant; Christ is faithful as the Son over it. Then comes the splendid architectural turn: the house may be honoured, but the builder has greater honour, and God is the builder of everything.

The wilderness questionsvv. 7–19

The warning arrives as a remembered voice from the wilderness: seeing God's works for forty years did not prevent hearts from going astray. The chapter then tightens the screws with three questions whose answers are already waiting inside them: the rebels were the people Moses led out of Egypt; the sinners were those whose bodies fell in the wilderness; the disobedient were the ones barred from rest. The final explanation is almost brisk in its certainty: unbelief kept them out.

  1. Heb 3:1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, set your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

  2. Heb 3:2He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.

  3. Heb 3:3For Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.

  4. Heb 3:4And every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

  5. Heb 3:5Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be spoken later.

  6. Heb 3:6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast.

  7. Heb 3:7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice,

  8. Heb 3:8do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness,

  9. Heb 3:9where your fathers tested and tried Me, and for forty years saw My works.

  10. Heb 3:10Therefore I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’

  11. Heb 3:11So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’”

  12. Heb 3:12See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God.

  13. Heb 3:13But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

  14. Heb 3:14We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first.

  15. Heb 3:15As it has been said: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion.”

  16. Heb 3:16For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?

  17. Heb 3:17And with whom was God angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

  18. Heb 3:18And to whom did He swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed?

  19. Heb 3:19So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
