The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The earth staggers like a drunkard, sways like a shack, and falls never to rise again—a remarkably poor evening for solid ground.

The earth emptiedvv. 1–13

The LORD lays waste the earth without respect for rank: priest and people, servant and master, buyer and seller all receive the same unsettled lodging. The land mourns, the wine dries up, the instruments fall silent, and the city of chaos is shut tight. What remains is compared to an olive tree after harvest, or grapes after the gleaners have finished: not quite nothing, but very nearly.

Songs, pits, and snaresvv. 14–22

Then, with the land scarcely more cheerful than a swept cupboard, voices rise from west to east and from the ends of the earth: “Glory to the Righteous One.” The speaker cannot join the chorus, being too busy wasting away and noticing that the treacherous are still treacherous. Escape offers no improvement: panic leads to a pit, the pit to a snare, and the shaken foundations wait beneath it all. Even the heavenly host and earthly kings are gathered into confinement, like prisoners put away for a very long time.

The reign on Mount Zionv. 23

At the last turn, the moon is confounded and the sun is ashamed. The LORD of Hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, before His elders with great glory; after all that staggering, the chapter ends with the heavens looking rather embarrassed.

  1. Isa 24:1Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants—

  2. Isa 24:2people and priest alike, servant and master, maid and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor.

  3. Isa 24:3The earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly plundered. For the LORD has spoken this word.

  4. Isa 24:4The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth waste away.

  5. Isa 24:5The earth is defiled by its people; they have transgressed the laws; they have overstepped the decrees and broken the everlasting covenant.

  6. Isa 24:6Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few survive.

  7. Isa 24:7The new wine dries up, the vine withers. All the merrymakers now groan.

  8. Isa 24:8The joyful tambourines have ceased; the noise of revelers has stopped; the joyful harp is silent.

  10. Isa 24:10The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry.

  11. Isa 24:11In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom; rejoicing is exiled from the land.

  12. Isa 24:12The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to rubble.

  13. Isa 24:13So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest.

  14. Isa 24:14They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they proclaim the majesty of the LORD.

  15. Isa 24:15Therefore glorify the LORD in the east. Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the sea.

  16. Isa 24:16From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I am wasting away! I am wasting away! Woe is me.” The treacherous betray; the treacherous deal in treachery.

  17. Isa 24:17Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth.

  18. Isa 24:18Whoever flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

  19. Isa 24:19The earth is utterly broken apart, the earth is split open, the earth is shaken violently.

  20. Isa 24:20The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a shack. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.

  21. Isa 24:21In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven above and the kings of the earth below.

  22. Isa 24:22They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon and punished after many days.

  23. Isa 24:23The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed; for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders with great glory.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
