The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Job calls the one who tears him apart his witness and advocate, then asks for a man who might plead with God as with a neighbour.

Miserable comfortersvv. 1–6

Job has heard enough speeches to identify a new species of help: miserable comforters. He could answer in the same fashion, piling up words and shaking his head, but says that his own mouth would instead encourage the sufferer. Speaking does not lessen his pain; silence, plainly, has not discovered the trick either.

The target and the witnessvv. 7–17

Job describes God as the force that has exhausted and devastated him: binding him, tearing him, setting him up as a target, and surrounding him with archers. The complaint becomes remarkably anatomical; kidneys are pierced and gall spills upon the ground. Yet Job insists that his hands are free of violence and his prayer pure, while sackcloth, dust, tears, and darkened eyes make their own grim procession.

A witness on highvv. 18–22

Job will not have the earth cover his blood or his cry be laid to rest. His friends scoff while his eyes pour out tears to God, but above that scene stands the astonishing appeal: the one addressed as God is also named as witness and advocate. The desired arrangement is almost domestic in its simplicity—a man pleading with God as with a neighbour—though Job says only a few years remain before the way of no return.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
