The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Judah’s grand boundary account ends with a small, stubborn splinter: after all the lines, slopes, springs, cities, and villages have been named, the Jebusites are still living in Jerusalem. In the middle comes an even odder arrangement—a captured city exchanged for a bride, followed by a perfectly sensible request for water.

A border drawn in every directionvv. 1–12

The allotment of Judah is traced with the enthusiasm of a surveyor who has found an especially satisfying piece of string. It begins at Edom and the Wilderness of Zin, touches the Salt Sea, Kadesh, and the Brook of Egypt, reaches the Jordan, and then winds through Beth-arabah, Gilgal, Adummim, Jerusalem, Kiriath-jearim, and Ekron before arriving at the Great Sea. The chapter is not merely giving Judah land; it is making the land perform a long circuit in words.

Caleb, Acsah, and the springsvv. 13–20

Joshua gives Caleb Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, and Caleb drives out Anak’s three sons: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai. Then Caleb offers his daughter Acsah as the prize for capturing Debir, formerly Kiriath-sepher; Othniel captures it and receives her. Acsah, however, does not leave the arrangement at the level of marriage and acreage. She asks her father for springs to accompany the land in the Negev, and Caleb gives her both the upper and lower springs. A conquest prize has acquired irrigation.

The inheritance, with one stubborn exceptionvv. 21–63

The remainder is an inventory of Judah’s inheritance: cities in the Negev, the foothills, the hill country, and the wilderness, each followed by its villages and, now and then, a total that seems to have wandered in from another counting exercise. The lists press on through Ekron, Ashdod, Gaza, Debir, Hebron, and Kiriath-jearim. Then the chapter closes not with a conquered city but with an inhabitant who remains: the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites from Jerusalem, and the Jebusites live there among them to this day.

  1. Josh 15:1Now the allotment for the clans of the tribe of Judah extended to the border of Edom, to the Wilderness of Zin at the extreme southern boundary:

  2. Josh 15:2Their southern border started at the bay on the southern tip of the Salt Sea,

  3. Josh 15:3proceeded south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continued on to Zin, went over to the south of Kadesh-barnea, ran past Hezron up to Addar, and curved toward Karka.

  4. Josh 15:4It proceeded to Azmon, joined the Brook of Egypt, and ended at the Sea. This was their southern border.

  5. Josh 15:5The eastern border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The northern border started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan,

  6. Josh 15:6went up to Beth-hoglah, proceeded north of Beth-arabah, and went up to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.

  7. Josh 15:7Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor, turning north to Gilgal, which faces the Ascent of Adummim south of the ravine. It continued along the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.

  8. Josh 15:8From there the border went up the Valley of Ben-hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that faces the Valley of Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.

  9. Josh 15:9From the hilltop the border curved to the spring of the Waters of Nephtoah, proceeded to the cities of Mount Ephron, and then bent around toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim).

  10. Josh 15:10The border curled westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), went down to Beth-shemesh, and crossed to Timnah.

  11. Josh 15:11Then it went out to the northern slope of Ekron, curved toward Shikkeron, proceeded to Mount Baalah, went on to Jabneel, and ended at the Sea.

  12. Josh 15:12And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea. These are the boundaries around the clans of the descendants of Judah.

  13. Josh 15:13According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)

  14. Josh 15:14And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak—the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

  15. Josh 15:15From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).

  16. Josh 15:16And Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”

  17. Josh 15:17So Othniel son of Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured the city, and Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.

  18. Josh 15:18One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”

  19. Josh 15:19“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.

  20. Josh 15:20This is the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Judah.

  21. Josh 15:21These were the southernmost cities of the tribe of Judah in the Negev toward the border of Edom: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

  22. Josh 15:22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
