Exodus 17

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

At Rephidim, a stone becomes Moses’ chair, Aaron and Hur become his arms, and the battle lasts until sunset.

Water from the rockvv. 1–7

Israel leaves the Desert of Sin and camps at Rephidim, where there is no water. The people quarrel with Moses, Moses fears they will stone him, and the LORD sends him ahead with the elders and the staff that struck the Nile. At Horeb, Moses strikes the rock; water comes out, and the place receives two names, Massah and Meribah, for quarrelling and testing the LORD.

Hands until sunsetvv. 8–16

The Amalekites attack Israel at Rephidim. Joshua leads the fight while Moses stands on the hilltop with the staff of God: raised hands mean Israel prevails, lowered hands mean Amalek prevails. When Moses tires, a stone is supplied as a seat and Aaron and Hur hold up his hands until sunset; Joshua then overwhelms Amalek. The LORD orders the victory written on a scroll, declares Amalek’s memory will be blotted out, and Moses builds an altar named The LORD Is My Banner.

  1. Exod 17:1Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin, moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

  2. Exod 17:2So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”

  3. Exod 17:3But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”

  4. Exod 17:4Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”

  5. Exod 17:5And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

  6. Exod 17:6Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

  7. Exod 17:7He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

  8. Exod 17:8After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.

  9. Exod 17:9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”

  10. Exod 17:10Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

  11. Exod 17:11As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.

  12. Exod 17:12When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.

  13. Exod 17:13So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the sword.

  14. Exod 17:14Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as a reminder and recite it to Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”

  15. Exod 17:15And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.

  16. Exod 17:16“Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
