The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Shaharaim divorced Hushim and Baara, went to Moab, married Hodesh, and then had sons by Hushim as well—a family arrangement the genealogy leaves standing, briskly and without explanation.

Benjamin’s sons and the first tangled householdvv. 1–11

The chapter begins with Benjamin’s five sons, led by Bela, and then gives Bela’s long list of descendants. The descendants of Ehud appear as heads of families in Geba, exiled to Manahath; Gera carried them into exile and fathered Uzza and Ahihud. Then comes Shaharaim, whose household takes the chapter’s most unexpected turn: after divorcing Hushim and Baara in Moab, he had sons by Hodesh, and then—quite undeterred by the previous sentence—sons by Hushim too.

Families, builders, and men who drove out Gathvv. 12–28

Elpaal’s descendants spread across a crowded genealogy. Shemed built Ono and Lod with its villages, while Beriah and Shema were heads of families in Aijalon and drove out the inhabitants of Gath. More sons follow—of Beriah, Elpaal, Shimei, Shashak, and Jeroham—until the list settles on a useful summary: these were family chiefs, living in Jerusalem. A great many names, and one small military footnote.

From Gibeon to Saul, and onward to archersvv. 29–40

Jeiel, father of Gibeon, lived in Gibeon with Maacah, and their descendants continued alongside their relatives in Jerusalem. The line then narrows neatly through Ner, Kish, Saul, and Jonathan: Saul was father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal; Jonathan was father of Merib-baal, who was father of Micah. From Micah came four sons and a further chain ending in Azel, whose six sons are named. Eshek’s son Ulam closes the chapter with sons who were mighty men of valor and archers, together with 150 sons and grandsons—a genealogy ending, rather splendidly, with a quiverful.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.

2 more are reached this way in this chapter, by fewer of its verses than the 24 above.
