The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Tertius has been writing the letter until, quite suddenly, he steps into it himself: “I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.”

A household of greetingsvv. 1–16

Phoebe arrives first, commended as a sister, a servant of the church in Cenchrea, and a great help to many. Then comes the long, warm roll call: Prisca and Aquila, who risked their lives; Epaenetus, the first convert in Asia; Mary, who worked very hard; Andronicus and Junia, fellow prisoners and apostles; and a procession of beloved workers, households, brothers, sisters, and saints. The household of Aristobulus is greeted, though Aristobulus is not; the household of Narcissus is greeted only insofar as its members are in the Lord. Rufus is chosen in the Lord, while his mother receives the most personal remark in the list: she has been a mother to the writer as well. The greetings end with a holy kiss, and all the churches of Christ sending theirs along.

A warning amid the embracesvv. 17–20

After all those greetings, the tone turns sharply. Divisive people are to be watched and avoided: their smooth talk serves their appetites rather than the Lord Christ, and it deceives the hearts of the naive. The obedience of the brothers is praised, but wisdom about good and innocence about evil are wanted. Then comes the splendidly disproportionate image of the God of peace crushing Satan under their feet, followed by grace from the Lord Jesus Christ.

The scribe and the final doxologyvv. 21–27

Timothy, Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater send greetings, and then Tertius takes his brief turn. Gaius sends greetings from the house that has hosted the writer and the whole church; Erastus, the city treasurer, and Quartus add theirs. The chapter closes by gathering the gospel, the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the once-hidden mystery, the writings of the prophets, all nations, obedience from faith, and the only wise God into one great sentence of praise.

  1. Rom 16:1I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea.

  2. Rom 16:2Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything she may need from you. For she has been a great help to many people, including me.

  3. Rom 16:3Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,

  4. Rom 16:4who have risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.

  5. Rom 16:5Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my beloved Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.

  6. Rom 16:6Greet Mary, who has worked very hard for you.

  7. Rom 16:7Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow countrymen and fellow prisoners. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

  8. Rom 16:8Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.

  9. Rom 16:9Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys.

  10. Rom 16:10Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.

  11. Rom 16:11Greet Herodion, my fellow countryman. Greet those from the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.

  12. Rom 16:12Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, women who have worked hard in the Lord. Greet my beloved Persis, who has worked very hard in the Lord.

  13. Rom 16:13Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.

  14. Rom 16:14Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers with them.

  15. Rom 16:15Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas and all the saints with them.

  17. Rom 16:17Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away from them.

  18. Rom 16:18For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

  19. Rom 16:19Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil.

  20. Rom 16:20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

  21. Rom 16:21Timothy, my fellow worker, sends you greetings, as do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my fellow countrymen.

  22. Rom 16:22I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.

  23. Rom 16:23Gaius, who has hosted me and all the church, sends you greetings. Erastus, the city treasurer, sends you greetings, as does our brother Quartus.

  24. Rom 16:25Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel and by the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery concealed for ages past

  25. Rom 16:26but now revealed and made known through the writings of the prophets by the command of the eternal God, in order to lead all nations to the obedience that comes from faith—

  26. Rom 16:27to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
