What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Solomon’s building programme ends with a remarkably precise bit of sacred real estate: Pharaoh’s daughter is moved out of the City of David because the ark has been there. Royal housing, it turns out, has a holiness boundary.

Cities, officers, and a careful removalvv. 1–11

After twenty years of building, Solomon turns to rebuilding. Hiram’s cities receive Israelite settlers; Hamath-zobah is captured; Tadmor, store cities, fortified Beth-horon, Baalath, chariot cities, and horse cities follow in brisk succession. The people remaining from the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites become forced labourers, while Israelites serve as soldiers, captains, chariot commanders, cavalry, and the 250 chief officers. Then comes the most ceremonious house move in the passage: Solomon brings Pharaoh’s daughter from the City of David to the palace made for her, because the ark has entered the former places and made them holy. Sacred zoning, with a royal marriage caught neatly on the right side of the boundary.

The finished house and its ordered servicevv. 12–16

Solomon offers burnt offerings on the altar before the portico and keeps the appointed offerings for Sabbaths, New Moons, and the three annual feasts. Priests, Levites, and gatekeepers are assigned their divisions according to David’s ordinances, and the treasuries are included in the king’s command. The work begun with the foundation is now finished: the house of the LORD is complete, and nothing in the account suggests that the administration misplaced a single priest.

Gold from the coastvv. 17–18

Solomon then goes down to Ezion-geber and Eloth on the coast of Edom. Hiram supplies ships, experienced sailors, and crews to work with Solomon’s servants; they reach Ophir and return with 450 talents of gold. The chapter closes not with a final brick, but with a very large maritime receipt.

  1. 2 Chr 8:1Now at the end of the twenty years during which Solomon had built the house of the LORD and his own palace,

  2. 2 Chr 8:2Solomon rebuilt the cities Hiram had given him and settled Israelites there.

  3. 2 Chr 8:3Then Solomon went to Hamath-zobah and captured it.

  4. 2 Chr 8:4He built Tadmor in the wilderness, in addition to all the store cities that he had built in Hamath.

  5. 2 Chr 8:5He rebuilt Upper and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,

  6. 2 Chr 8:6as well as Baalath, all the store cities that belonged to Solomon, and all the cities for his chariots and horses—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and throughout the land of his dominion.

  7. 2 Chr 8:7As for all the people who remained of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites (these people were not Israelites)—

  8. 2 Chr 8:8their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites had not destroyed—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day.

  9. 2 Chr 8:9But Solomon did not consign any of the Israelites to slave labor, because they were his men of war, the leaders of his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry.

  10. 2 Chr 8:10They were also the chief officers for King Solomon: 250 supervisors.

  11. 2 Chr 8:11Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her. For he said, “My wife must not live in the house of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the LORD has entered are holy.”

  12. 2 Chr 8:12At that time Solomon offered burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of the LORD he had built in front of the portico.

  13. 2 Chr 8:13He observed the daily requirement for offerings according to the commandment of Moses for Sabbaths, New Moons, and the three annual appointed feasts—the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles.

  14. 2 Chr 8:14In keeping with the ordinances of his father David, Solomon appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, and the Levites for their duties to offer praise and to minister before the priests according to the daily requirement. He also appointed gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.

  15. 2 Chr 8:15They did not turn aside from the king’s command regarding the priests or the Levites in any matter, including that of the treasuries.

  16. 2 Chr 8:16Thus all the work of Solomon was carried out, from the day the foundation was laid for the house of the LORD until it was finished. So the house of the LORD was completed.

  17. 2 Chr 8:17Then Solomon went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth on the coast of Edom.

  18. 2 Chr 8:18So Hiram sent him ships captained by his servants, along with crews of experienced sailors. They went with Solomon’s servants to Ophir and acquired from there 450 talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
