The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The LORD sends David into battle by a sound of marching in the tops of balsam trees; the chapter tells what the sound means, but not what makes it.

A palace, a household, and a kingdomvv. 1–7

Hiram of Tyre sends cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters to David, and a palace rises into the chapter before David's household begins its own considerable extension. David takes more wives in Jerusalem and fathers sons and daughters, whose names are then given in a brisk, princely roll: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, and the rest.

The trees give the signalvv. 8–17

The Philistines come looking for David and raid the Valley of Rephaim. David asks God what to do, defeats them at Baal-perazim, and burns the gods they abandon. When the raid happens again, the answer is wonderfully specific: do not march up after them, but circle around, wait by the balsam trees, and move when the treetops sound like marching. David obeys; the army falls from Gibeon to Gezer, and his fame spreads through every land.

  1. 1 Chr 14:1Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters, to build a palace for him.

  2. 1 Chr 14:2And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had highly exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

  3. 1 Chr 14:3And David took more wives in Jerusalem and became the father of more sons and daughters.

  4. 1 Chr 14:4These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

  5. 1 Chr 14:5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,

  6. 1 Chr 14:6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,

  7. 1 Chr 14:7Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

  8. 1 Chr 14:8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went out to face them.

  9. 1 Chr 14:9Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim.

  10. 1 Chr 14:10So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”

  11. 1 Chr 14:11So David and his men went up to Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a bursting flood, God has burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place Baal-perazim.

  12. 1 Chr 14:12There the Philistines abandoned their gods, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.

  13. 1 Chr 14:13Once again the Philistines raided the valley.

  14. 1 Chr 14:14So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the balsam trees.

  15. 1 Chr 14:15As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move out to battle, because this will mean that God has gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”

  16. 1 Chr 14:16So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

  17. 1 Chr 14:17And David’s fame went out into every land, and the LORD caused all nations to fear him.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
