The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

John is sent to point out the Light, yet twice says he did not know Jesus; Nathanael needs only a fig tree for the conversation to leap to the Son of God and King of Israel.

The Light enters its own worldvv. 1–18

Before anyone is baptised, followed, or mildly suspicious of Nazareth, the Word is already with God and is the means by which all things were made. Then comes the extraordinary descent: the Word becomes flesh, lives among people, and is not recognised by the world He made. John appears as a witness, carefully insisting that he is not the Light, while grace and truth arrive through Jesus Christ.

John knows enough to say he did not knowvv. 19–34

Priests and Levites arrive from Jerusalem with a tidy set of possibilities: Christ, Elijah, or the Prophet. John rejects all three labels and gives them instead a voice in the wilderness, followed by the rather splendid claim that someone stands among them whom they do not know. The next day, John sees Jesus, and the Spirit settles on Him like a dove; this is the point at which John can testify that Jesus is the Son of God, though he has twice explained that he did not know Him.

A fig tree, a new name, and heaven openingvv. 35–51

John points at Jesus again, and two disciples promptly follow Him. Andrew fetches Simon, Jesus gives Simon the new name Peter, and Philip fetches Nathanael. Nathanael begins with a question about Nazareth, but Jesus answers with knowledge of the fig tree; the exchange then accelerates magnificently from local scepticism to “the Son of God” and “the King of Israel,” before Jesus promises sights considerably grander than botanical reconnaissance.

  37. John 1:37And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

  49. John 1:49“Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

  50. John 1:50Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”

  51. John 1:51Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
