The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Shimri became “the first” by appointment, despite not being the firstborn—a small family decision which, in this chapter, ends up standing beside the grand machinery of gates, treasuries, judges, and 2,700 capable men.

The gates are allotted by lotvv. 1–19

The gatekeepers begin as families: Meshelemiah’s seven sons, Obed-edom’s eight, and Hosah’s four. Obed-edom’s list receives the chapter’s cheerful little flourish—“For God had blessed Obed-edom”—while Hosah’s list contains its quiet constitutional amendment: Shimri is first because his father appointed him so. Then the lots go round. Shelemiah receives the East Gate, his son Zechariah the North, Obed-edom the South, and his sons the storehouses; Hosah and Shuppim take the western arrangements, including Shallecheth on the ascending highway. The daily numbers are wonderfully exact and entirely unexplained: six here, four there, two pairs by the storehouse, as if the gates themselves had differing appetites.

Treasuries, judges, and the western half of Israelvv. 20–32

After the gates comes the keeping of things: the treasuries of the house of God, the dedicated things, and the spoils set aside for repairing the house of the LORD. Shelomoth and his brothers guard what David, Samuel, Saul, Abner, Joab, and the commanders dedicated; the chapter gives this treasure a long family staircase before allowing it to rest in their care. Chenaniah and his sons handle outside duties as officers and judges. Hashabiah’s 1,700 men oversee affairs west of the Jordan, while Jerijah’s relatives—2,700 heads of families—are appointed over the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh. The gate list has become an administrative universe, and it still manages to end with genealogy.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
