The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The journey list pauses long enough for Aaron to climb Mount Hor and die, then resumes its brisk business of setting out and camping—though one camp changes its name between arrival and departure.

A road measured by campsvv. 1–36

Moses records the Israelites’ departure from Rameses under the leadership of Moses and Aaron, and the itinerary proceeds in a wonderfully steady rhythm: set out, camp, set out, camp. There is one small oasis of exactitude at Elim—twelve springs and seventy palm trees—and one dry interruption at Rephidim, where there is no water for the people. After the sea, the wildernesses, and a respectable procession of names, the route reaches Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.

Mount Hor, then onwardvv. 37–49

At Mount Hor, the itinerary briefly ceases to be merely an itinerary. Aaron climbs the mountain at the LORD’s command and dies there, aged 123, in the fortieth year after the departure from Egypt. The Israelites then continue through Zalmonah, Punon, Oboth, and the places beyond; at Iye-abarim they camp on the border of Moab, but the next departure is attributed to Iyim, with no explanation offered for the alteration. At last they camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, facing Jericho, from Beth-jeshimoth to Abel-shittim—a grand conclusion to a list that has mostly preferred the plain little word “camped.”

The word on the plainsvv. 50–56

On the plains of Moab by the Jordan, the LORD speaks to Moses about what is to happen when the Israelites cross into Canaan. The inhabitants are to be driven out, their images destroyed, and the land divided by lot according to clans, with larger and smaller inheritances allotted in proportion. The warning is presented in two memorable pieces of anatomy: those left behind will be barbs in the eyes and thorns in the sides; then the LORD will do to the Israelites what had been planned for those inhabitants.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
