The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The allotment committee contains two men called sons of Ammihud: Shemuel of Simeon and Pedahel of Naphtali. The chapter offers no family footnote, merely sets them down several names apart, as if the inheritance could tolerate a small genealogical riddle.

A land with an unusually well-described edgevv. 1–15

The LORD gives Moses a border lecture of impressive stamina. The southern line begins by the Wilderness of Zin, brushes the border of Edom, passes the Salt Sea, Akrabbim, Kadesh-barnea, Hazar-addar and Azmon, then reaches the Brook of Egypt and the Sea. The Great Sea serves as the western edge; the northern line runs through Mount Hor, Lebo-hamath, Zedad, Ziphron and Hazar-enan; the eastern line comes back by Shepham, Riblah, Ain, the Sea of Chinnereth, the Jordan and the Salt Sea. Moses then orders the land apportioned by lot to the nine and a half tribes, while two and a half tribes already possess land across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise. The arithmetic is perfectly plain and faintly theatrical.

The men who will divide itvv. 16–29

The LORD names Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun to assign the inheritance, then adds one leader from each tribe. Caleb represents Judah; Shemuel Simeon; Elidad Benjamin; Bukki Dan; Hanniel Manasseh; Kemuel Ephraim; Elizaphan Zebulun; Paltiel Issachar; Ahihud Asher; and Pedahel Naphtali. Two Ammihuds therefore send sons to opposite corners of the list, while the whole panel is gathered for one sober business: apportioning Canaan to Israel.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
