The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Gath-rimmon is allotted once to Dan and, a few lines later, once to half-Manasseh; Joshua 21 simply lets the two Gath-rimmons sit there together, like an untroubled pair of identical coats.

Cities for the Levitesvv. 1–19

At Shiloh, the family heads of the Levites ask Eleazar, Joshua, and the tribal heads for the cities and pasturelands commanded through Moses. The allotment begins with the Kohathites: Aaron’s descendants receive thirteen cities from Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, while the fields around Hebron remain Caleb’s possession. The arithmetic is brisk and rather pastoral: cities, pasturelands, lots, and thirteen.

The full tally and the quiet conclusionvv. 20–45

The remaining Kohathites receive ten cities; the Gershonites thirteen; and the Merarites twelve. Among the names comes Gath-rimmon for Dan, then Gath-rimmon again for half-Manasseh. The chapter does not explain whether the name belongs to two places or has simply been counted twice. Forty-eight Levite cities are finally gathered into one number, each with its surrounding pasturelands, and the narrative turns from allotment to settlement: Israel possesses the land, receives rest, and finds that not one good promise has failed.

  1. Josh 21:1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel

  2. Josh 21:2at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”

  3. Josh 21:3So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

  4. Josh 21:4The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

  5. Josh 21:5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

  7. Josh 21:7And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

  8. Josh 21:8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

  9. Josh 21:9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated these cities by name

  10. Josh 21:10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:

  11. Josh 21:11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)

  12. Josh 21:12But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.

  13. Josh 21:13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah,

  14. Josh 21:14Jattir, Eshtemoa,

  15. Josh 21:15Holon, Debir,

  16. Josh 21:16Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.

  17. Josh 21:17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,

  18. Josh 21:18Anathoth, and Almon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  19. Josh 21:19In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.

  20. Josh 21:20The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim

  21. Josh 21:21they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer,

  22. Josh 21:22Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  23. Josh 21:23From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,

  24. Josh 21:24Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  25. Josh 21:25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two cities, together with their pasturelands.

  26. Josh 21:26In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.

  27. Josh 21:27This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their pasturelands.

  28. Josh 21:28From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kishion, Daberath,

  29. Josh 21:29Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  30. Josh 21:30From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon,

  31. Josh 21:31Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  33. Josh 21:33In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Gershonite clans.

  34. Josh 21:34This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given: From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah,

  35. Josh 21:35Dimnah, and Nahalal—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  36. Josh 21:36From the tribe of Reuben they were given Bezer, Jahaz,

  37. Josh 21:37Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

  38. Josh 21:38And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim,

  39. Josh 21:39Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.

  40. Josh 21:40In all, twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari, the remaining Levite clans.

  41. Josh 21:41For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.

  42. Josh 21:42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.

  43. Josh 21:43Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.

  44. Josh 21:44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

  45. Josh 21:45Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
