Job 19

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Job's breath is repulsive to his wife, while he escapes by the skin of his teeth.

A net around Jobvv. 1–22

Job answers the reproaches with a question of his own: how long must words torment and crush him? He says the number is ten, though the chapter supplies none of the occasions, and insists that even a real error would concern him alone. Then the complaint widens into a catalogue of abandonment. God has blocked his way, stripped his honour, uprooted his hope, and encamped around his tent; brothers, acquaintances, kinsmen, friends, guests, maidservants, servant, wife, family, little boys, and the people he loves have all become part of the desolation. In the middle of it comes the wonderfully exact remnant: “My skin and flesh cling to my bones; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.”

Words cut into permanencevv. 23–27

Job wishes his words could be recorded—not merely written, but fixed with an iron stylus on lead or chiselled in stone forever. The lament then turns sharply: he knows that his Redeemer lives and that, in the end, He will stand upon the earth. Job says he will see God for himself, with his own eyes, not as a stranger; the sentence ends with a heart that yearns within him.

The sword for the persecutorsvv. 28–29

Job turns back to the people who would say that the root of the matter lies with him. If they continue to persecute him, he says, they should fear the sword themselves: wrath brings punishment by the sword, and judgment is not absent merely because Job has been left in the dark.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
